The call came from a tire shop right at the Encanto Border edge of Lemon Grove. A Tundra owner had brought his truck in for a tire swap, handed over his one key, and somewhere in the shuffle the key got damaged. The plastic head was cracked through, and the chip inside had shifted. The blade still turned the cylinder, but the truck would crank and immediately die. Classic immobilizer cut-off.
A different locksmith had already come out and left. From what the tire shop told me, that first tech cut a new blade, handed it over, collected payment, and drove off without programming the transponder. The truck still wouldn't start. The tire shop owner was patient about it, but the Tundra was sitting on their lot taking up a bay.
I showed up with the programming tool and a proper chipped blank. Cut the blade to match the original using the code pulled from the lock, then enrolled the transponder through the OBD port while the truck was still sitting in the bay. The immobilizer accepted the new key on the first attempt. I had the owner turn it off, step out, wait a few seconds, and restart twice more just to confirm it wasn't a fluke. Both times, clean start, no stall, no warning light.
The tire shop finished the wheel swap while I was still writing up the paperwork. The owner mentioned the dealer had quoted him a multi-day turnaround minimum just to get it looked at. He didn't say much else, just took the key and shook my hand.
