Do I need to tow my MR2 to the dealer for a replacement key?

No. Toyota dealers will often tell you to tow it in, and for some newer vehicles that makes sense. For the 2001 MR2 Spyder it does not. The transponder programming is done through the OBD port, which means the work happens at the car. I bring the equipment to you. Towing adds cost before the dealer even looks at the key, and then you are still waiting on a parts order. We cut and program on site, same visit.

What do I need to prove I own the vehicle before you make a key?

A valid photo ID and your registration or title. We verify the VIN from the dashboard plate or the door jamb sticker on your MR2 to confirm everything lines up. Same standard a dealer would hold you to, done right there on site in a few minutes. We keep it clean and simple so the job moves quickly.

I bought a replacement transponder key online. Can you just program it, or do I need a specific blank?

This comes up a lot with MR2 Spyder owners because the key looks simple and the blanks are cheap online. The short answer is: it depends on the blank.

The 2001 MR2 Spyder requires a key blank with the correct transponder chip inside for it to pair with the immobilizer. A lot of blanks sold online look identical on the outside but have the wrong chip, or no chip at all. If the chip type does not match what the immobilizer expects, programming will fail and the car will not start.

Before you buy anything, call me. I carry the correct blanks and I know what works on this car. If you already bought something, bring it along and I can tell you on site whether it is usable before we start the job.

Question 5

My MR2 starts fine sometimes and cranks but does not start other times. Could this be a key or immobilizer issue?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and it is one of the more common complaints on these cars as the original keys age. An intermittent no-start where the engine cranks normally but immediately dies, or dies within a couple seconds, points to the immobilizer not reading the transponder chip cleanly. This can happen when the chip inside the key head is cracked, when the key head housing has flexed or separated, or in some cases when the receiver coil around the ignition cylinder has a weak connection.

The pattern owners describe on forums is exactly that: starts fine in the morning, will not start in the afternoon, starts again an hour later with no explanation. It gets blamed on heat, fuel, electrics, almost everything except the key.

If the engine fires and dies right away, that is the security system cutting fuel or ignition. That is where I would start diagnosing. On site, same visit as cutting a replacement key if that turns out to be the fix.
