2003 Toyota MR2
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2003 Toyota MR2 Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

In Lakeside Proper, right near one of those small plaza parking lots off the main drag, a woman called me about her 2003 Toyota MR2 Spyder. She said the key had been getting harder to turn for a few weeks. Some mornings it was fine. Other mornings she was sitting there working the key back and forth, hoping it would catch and turn.

She had already called the dealer. They told her she needed a full ignition cylinder replacement, new keys, and a programming appointment. The number they gave her made her stop and think before agreeing.

When I pulled up and looked at the cylinder, the issue was worn internal wafers, not a dead lock. The cylinder itself was still serviceable. I decoded the lock to get the correct bitting, replaced the worn wafers, and cut a fresh key matched to the repaired cylinder. Before touching anything mechanical, I backed up the immobilizer data as a precaution so nothing was at risk during the repair.

The key slides in clean now and turns the first time, every time. She did not need a new cylinder. She did not need to leave the car somewhere overnight. The whole job happened in the parking lot while she waited, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted.

The MR2 Spyder is a small, low-slung car. Working in that cockpit-style interior takes a little patience, but the job itself was solid. I always like leaving one of these in better shape than I found it.
