2005 Toyota MR2
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a transponder key and why can't I just get one cut at a hardware store?

The key your 2005 MR2 uses has two jobs. The metal blade operates the ignition cylinder mechanically, just like any key. But inside the plastic head there's a transponder chip. When you turn the key, a coil ring around the ignition cylinder reads that chip. If the chip isn't recognized, the immobilizer blocks the engine from starting. The blade can be a perfect cut and the car still won't run without a programmed chip. Hardware stores cut the blade.

Q: How long does the dealer process actually take for a Toyota key replacement?

Longer than you'd want. Even for a transponder key on an older vehicle, dealers often have to order key blanks, schedule a technician, and sometimes keep the car for at least a day. Owners on Toyota forums have posted about waiting days just for a basic transponder key job that a locksmith handles in under an hour. With me, the job happens in one visit at your location in Bay Marina or anywhere else in National City.

Q: My 2005 MR2 turns over but immediately stalls every time I try to start it. Could this be a key problem?

That's actually one of the clearest signs of a transponder or immobilizer issue. The engine catches briefly because the mechanical side of the ignition is working, but then the immobilizer cuts it because the chip wasn't read correctly. Could be a failing chip inside the key head, a damaged coil ring around the ignition cylinder, or a key that was never properly programmed to this car in the first place. Crank-and-stall is different from crank-and-no-start.

Q: I have one working key for my MR2. Is it worth getting a spare made now, before I lose it?

Yes, and the reason is simple. Right now you have a working key in hand, which means this is an add-a-key job. I program a second key alongside the one you have. If you wait until that key is lost or damaged, it becomes an all-keys-lost situation, which takes more time and more work to resolve. Getting a spare while you still have the original is the smarter move, and it's the cheaper call too.

2005 Toyota MR2 Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy over in Bay Marina, National City, had just bought a 2005 Toyota MR2 Spyder off a private seller. Clean little two-seater, good shape, and the seller handed him one key at the curb. Just the one. He figured he'd get a spare cut at a hardware store and be done with it.

He tried that. The hardware store cut the blade fine, but the car wouldn't start with it. Just cranked and cranked. He thought maybe the cut was off, so he went back and had it recut. Same result.

By that point he looked it up and figured out the key has a transponder chip inside that has to be programmed to the car's immobilizer. Hardware stores cut metal. They don't program chips. He called the Toyota dealer and got a number back that made him pause. He called me right after.

I met him at his spot in Bay Marina. He handed me his original key and I got to work. I cut a new key blade to match his vehicle, programmed the transponder chip to register with the immobilizer, and verified it both started the car and turned the ignition smoothly. The whole job was done on site, no tow, no appointment, no leaving the car somewhere overnight.

He ended up with two working keys. He told me the dealer quote was the reason he called around first. That part I hear a lot.

Toyota MR2 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Toyota dealer to get a replacement key for my 2005 MR2?▼

No. A mobile locksmith can cut and program a replacement transponder key for your 2005 Toyota MR2 right where the car sits. The dealer is one option, not the only one. Going that route means scheduling time, possibly towing if you have no working key, and waiting on parts. For a transponder key on a car this age, none of that is necessary. I carry what I need and do the job on site in National City.
