How Eclipse Cross Key Security Has Evolved
1st Generation (GK)
You walk up to this one and the doors unlock automatically, but there is serious security behind that convenience. Your 2018-2021 Eclipse Cross uses a FAST Key smart key system with an ID46 PCF7953 transponder chip and push-button start. Programming requires OBD-II tools plus server authentication, so there is no shortcut around professional equipment.
1st Generation Facelift (GK)
Mitsubishi refreshed the styling and electronics for 2022, but the key system stayed the same under the hood. You still have the FAST Key smart key with an ID46 PCF7953 chip, CR2032 battery, and three buttons. Server authentication is still mandatory for programming, which means the same professional tools and the same process we use on the earlier models.
1st Generation Major Refresh (GK)
The 2024-2025 got a significant interior and infotainment overhaul, but Mitsubishi kept the proven FAST Key immobilizer system intact. Your key is still an ID46 PCF7953 smart key with push-button start. The programming method has not changed: OBD-II with server authentication. We verify the FCC ID on 2025 models before ordering parts, because Mitsubishi occasionally updates shell designs without announcing it.
Which Key Does Your Eclipse Cross Use?
This is the slim rectangular fob with lock, unlock, and start buttons. It stays in your pocket or bag. There is a small emergency blade hidden inside for manual door entry if the battery dies.
Same smart key design as the earlier models. Three buttons, push-button start, and a hidden emergency blade. The fob looks nearly identical to the 2018-2021 version.
Still the same FAST Key system with three buttons and push-button start. The shell design may vary slightly on the 2025, so we verify your FCC ID before sourcing the blank.

Common Eclipse Cross Key Problems
Smart Key Fob Battery Drain
Fob buttons work one day, nothing the next. FAST Key proximity sensors drain CR2032 faster than expected, especially if you store the key near the vehicle overnight. Swap a fresh CR2032 first before calling anyone.
Transponder Recognition Failure
Owners assume the fob battery is dead when a 2018-2022 Eclipse Cross will not start. If the security light flashes, the culprit is usually a weak transponder signal or failing antenna ring around the push-button switch. We test before recommending.
FAST Key Synchronization Loss
Car battery died, jump or replacement, smart key will not start the engine. FAST Key lost sync with the immobilizer, common in Oxnard and Camarillo. Two working keys means a relearn procedure; no working keys means OBD-II reprogramming.
Blade Wear on Emergency Slot
We always check the emergency blade first. Using the hidden blade manually because the fob keeps dying wears it down and can damage the cylinder. Worn blade is cheap; damaged cylinder is not. We cut fresh on-site and address the dead-fob cause.
Can You Program an Eclipse Cross Key Yourself?
If you already have two working FAST Keys, you can add a third using Mitsubishi's onboard registration procedure. You will need to keep the driver's door open, cycle through a specific button sequence on both existing keys, then touch the new key to the engine switch. It only programs one key at a time and does not work for all-keys-lost situations.
Same self-programming procedure as the 2018-2021 models. Two working keys required, driver's door open, button sequence, then touch the new blank to the start button. If you are down to one key or zero keys, you need professional OBD-II programming with server authentication.
The 2024-2025 refresh did not change the self-programming procedure. Two working keys let you add a new one yourself. But here is the catch: you need a properly coded blank with the right transponder chip. If you only have one key or no keys, call us at (805) 790-8162 and we handle it on-site.

Did You Know?
Back in the 1990s, the Eclipse name belonged to one of Mitsubishi's most iconic sport coupes. The Eclipse Cross revived that name in 2018, but the two vehicles could not be more different. What is really interesting is that the modern Eclipse Cross FAST Key smart entry system actually traces its roots to PSA Peugeot-Citroen platforms shared with the Outlander.
