How Outlander Sport Keys Changed Over the Years
Remote Head Key, ID46 Chip
You turn this key in the ignition like any other key, but there is an ID46 transponder chip inside the head that talks to the immobilizer every time you start the engine. Without that chip handshake, the engine will not fire. Programming is done on-board with our Autel or Xhorse tools, which keeps the job quick and straightforward.
Flip Key, ID46 Chip
Mitsubishi switched to a flip key design here. The blade folds into the fob, which looks sleeker and is easier to carry. Still uses the same ID46 chip and on-board programming, so we handle these in your driveway in about 20 to 35 minutes. A PIN code extraction is required, but that is part of our standard process.
Smart Key with Push-Button Start
This is where things got more advanced. Mitsubishi introduced their FAST Key proximity system with an ID46/ID47 family chip, so you keep the fob in your pocket and press a button to start. Programming requires OBD-II diagnostic access, meaning we plug into your vehicle's computer port and write the new key directly. No ignition slot on these.
Smart Key with Immobilizer II
The final facelift brought Mitsubishi's Immobilizer II system with server-based authentication. That means the programming process requires online verification through Mitsubishi's servers. We handle this with our VVDI tools and server access, though these jobs take a bit longer than earlier models. Still done on-site, still done right.
Which Key Does Your Outlander Sport Use?
A traditional key with buttons built into the head. You insert it into the ignition to start your vehicle. The transponder chip is embedded inside.
The blade folds into the fob body when not in use. Press the release button and the key flips out. Same insert-and-turn ignition as the earlier models.
A thicker fob that stays in your pocket. Your Outlander Sport detects it automatically and lets you push a button to start. There is a hidden emergency blade inside for manual door entry.
Looks and works like the 2016-2018 smart key, but uses a more advanced immobilizer system under the hood. Same push-button start, same emergency blade tucked inside.
The Real Cost of an Outlander Sport Key
All prices include the key blank, cutting, programming, and testing; no hidden fees.
EZ Car Keyz vs. the Dealer
When your only key breaks at 9 PM in Camarillo, the dealer is closed. We are not.
Common Outlander Sport Key Problems
Transponder Failure
Key turns, engine cranks and dies, security light stays on. The ID46 chip in 2011-2015 keys wears out, and once it stops communicating with the immobilizer the car will not start. We program a new key with a fresh chip on-site, usually under 30 minutes.
Smart Key Battery Drain
Owners blame the smart key when the real culprit is a drained CR2032. The 2016-2026 proximity fobs drain fast if left in the vehicle because car and fob keep pinging. We check the battery first; if that is the fix, we tell you honestly.
Immobilizer Sync Loss
After a dead car battery or jump start, the ECU can lose its handshake with the transponder. Not a key failure; a communication breakdown between two computers. We extract the PIN and resync your existing key, saving the cost of a new key.
Door Cylinder Actuator Failure
First check: is it actually a key problem? When power locks work intermittently, the default assumption is a dying fob. But on 2011-2018 Outlander Sports the door actuator motor wears out. Mechanical repair, not a locksmith job, and we tell you straight.
Can You Program an Outlander Sport Key Yourself?
No DIY self-programming procedure exists for these years. The ID46 transponder requires professional tools and PIN code extraction to pair with the immobilizer.
Same story here. The Mitsubishi immobilizer system requires on-board programming with diagnostic equipment like our Autel IM608 or Xhorse VVDI. No shortcut around it.
The FAST Key system with ID47 chip requires OBD-II diagnostic programming. You cannot add a key through any button sequence or ignition procedure at home.
These require server-based authentication on top of OBD-II access. Professional tools and Mitsubishi server verification are both mandatory. No DIY path exists.
