2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I really have to tow my 2017 Outlander Sport to the dealer if I have no keys?

No. A mobile locksmith with the right diagnostic equipment can do all-keys-lost at the vehicle's location. The 2017 Outlander Sport doesn't need to move anywhere. I carry the tools to access the security system, pull the PIN, register new keys, and cut the blade, all from my service van. Towing adds cost and time with no benefit for this job.

Q: How long does an all-keys-lost job take on a 2017 Outlander Sport?

Plan on 45 minutes to an hour on site. The security reset and key enrollment process has a timed sequence built into it, and if the previous key registration left the system in a partial state, clearing that adds a few minutes before the clean enrollment can start. The actual fob programming step goes quickly once the system is ready. Cutting the emergency insert blade is fast. The time adds up on the front end, not the back end.

Q: My 2017 Outlander Sport shows a key-not-detected warning but the car still starts. What's going on?

This is one of the more common complaints on these systems. When the fob battery is low, the vehicle can still detect the fob at close range near the start button, but it's not reading it consistently through the door handles or at normal pocket distance. So you get the warning on the dash, maybe some touch-unlock flakiness, but the car starts because the fob is basically sitting right next to the sensor. Replace the CR2032 first.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2017 Outlander Sport. Can I program it myself?

Not on this system. The 2017 Outlander Sport smart key requires professional diagnostic equipment to register a new fob. There is no button sequence or ignition-cycle trick that works for smart key enrollment on this vehicle. If you bought a fob online, you still need someone with the right tools to pair it to your car. The fob itself is just hardware until it's enrolled. Bring what you have, or we can supply the fob.

2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy over in Santa Susana Knolls. He was already frustrated before he said hello, which told me most of the story before he did.

He'd called one of those $29 Google ads a few days earlier. The locksmith who showed up had a tool that couldn't communicate with his 2017 Outlander Sport's security system. An hour of nothing, then the guy collected a fee anyway and left. The key still didn't work. So now the owner had paid once for a job that never got done, and he was calling me asking how to tell a real operator from the noise.

I gave him my BSIS license number right there on the phone. He looked it up on the state website while we were still talking. I told him I'd quote a flat number before I touched anything, and that was the number he'd pay.

When I got to him, I connected through the OBD port and ran the security module through the full key registration sequence. The previous attempt had left things in a half-enrolled state, which I've seen before when a tool drops mid-procedure. Cleaning that up took a few extra minutes, but once the system was back to a clean slate, the new fob came up on all four buttons and the car started without hesitation.

The dealer quote he'd gotten before all this was for considerably more than what I charged. He mentioned that almost as an afterthought. What he actually cared about was that it worked and he could trust the person doing it.

Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 2017 Outlander Sport. Can you still make a new one without a working fob?▼

Yes, all-keys-lost on the 2017 Outlander Sport is a job we handle on site. The process means resetting the vehicle's security system, extracting the PIN data through the OBD port, registering the new fob, and cutting the emergency insert blade. You don't need a working key to start from. The whole job is done at your location. Dealers typically require a tow for all-keys-lost, quote significantly more, and schedule you out days.
