Over in Pacific View, Ventura, a woman flagged me down through a parking lot near the nail salon strip. She had already been through one locksmith. The immobilizer passes the key on a warm start, then runs a deeper verification over subsequent drive cycles, and if the chip subtype is off it gets rejected. That is exactly what had happened here.
I read the previously programmed key with my diagnostic equipment. The chip data confirmed the mismatch. I programmed a fresh fob, the correct 3-button unit matching the factory fob ID for this application, and enrolled it properly through the OBD port. Walked through every function, including the door handles, the start button response, and the lock and unlock from outside. Parked it, walked away, came back, tested again.
She was back in her car in about forty minutes. She mentioned the dealer had quoted her weeks out just for an appointment. That part barely surprised me anymore.
