Over near Simi Valley Hospital, a guy flagged me down in the parking structure. Not my scheduled job, but he saw the van. His 2011 Outlander Sport SE had been sitting there since the night before. Engine cranked for about two seconds, then the immobilizer cut fuel. Classic symptom.

Mitsubishi's ETACS needs the full learn procedure to write a key into permanent memory. If you rush it or skip the final ignition cycle step, the key registers temporarily but drops out. The immobilizer sees an unrecognized transponder and kills the injectors.
I cleared the failed key data, ran a clean registration with the full timed sequence, and waited through the countdown. His OUC644M-KEY-N smart key, part number 8637B885, started the engine clean on three consecutive tests. I walked every button on the fob, tested passive entry on both front doors, and confirmed the push-button start from cold.
He'd already paid one locksmith for a job that wasn't finished. I couldn't fix that part. But the car started, and he drove it home.
