How Lancer Keys Changed Over the Years
8th Gen (CS/CSA)
Your 2003 to 2007 Lancer uses a 3-button remote head key with a Texas 4D61 transponder chip and a standard blade. FCC ID is OUCG8D-525M-A. It is a straightforward key to replace, and we program it through OBD-II right in your driveway. No push-button start on these, just a traditional ignition.
9th Gen (CZ)
Mitsubishi stepped things up here with a 4-button smart key and push-button start via the FAST Key system. Your key uses a Philips ID46 chip and the FCC ID is OUC644M-KEY-N. Programming requires professional OBD-II tools, and there is no DIY option. We handle these on-site with no issues.
9th Gen Facelift
A 4-button smart key with the same push-button start, but Mitsubishi added server authentication to the programming process. Your chip is still Philips ID46, and the FCC ID is OUC644M-KEY-N or MIT17A-PT depending on trim. We verify your VIN to confirm the exact spec before we roll out.
10th Gen (LA)
This is where the security architecture shifted. Your 2016 or 2017 Lancer uses a Texas 4D transponder chip in a 4-button remote head key, FCC ID OUCJ166N. No push-button start on this generation. Programming goes through OBD-II, and the key must match the exact FCC spec or it will not sync.
Which Key Does Your Lancer Use?
A traditional key with built-in remote buttons. You turn it in the ignition to start the car, and the transponder chip talks to the immobilizer automatically.
This is the FAST Key fob with push-button start. Keep it in your pocket and the car detects it when you walk up. There is a hidden mechanical blade inside for emergencies.
Same smart key concept as the 2008 to 2012, but with updated security that requires server verification during programming. Looks nearly identical to the earlier version.
Back to a traditional key you insert into the ignition. Four buttons for lock, unlock, trunk, and panic. Uses a Texas 4D chip that must be professionally programmed.
Lancer Key Replacement Pricing

Common Lancer Key Problems
Smart Key Programming Failures
First check: did someone try programming this key without the right tools? The OUC644M-KEY-N and MIT17A-PT smart fobs on 2008-2017 Lancers require OBD-II equipment and a VIN-derived PIN. Five failed attempts can lock out FAST Key. We reset on-site.
Transponder Chip Recognition Loss
Owners default-blame a dead battery, rarely the root. On 2003-2012 Lancers the transponder can lose sync with the ECU after a battery swap or electrical hiccup. Remote buttons work, engine refuses. A 15-minute OBD-II relearn fixes it.
Key Fob Battery Drain
Your 2016 or 2017 Lancer key fob eats CR2032s faster than expected. Constant proximity polling drains cheap cells in months; range shrinks before it dies completely. Drop in a quality-brand CR2032 and you should get a solid year out of it.
FCC ID Mismatch
Lancer keys across generations look identical, but FCC IDs differ. OUCG8D-525M-A, OUC644M-KEY-N, OUCJ166N: each talks to a different immobilizer. Wrong blank in your 2014 will not pair. We VIN-verify the FCC ID before cutting, in Simi Valley or Camarillo.
Can You Program a Lancer Key Yourself?
You can program the remote buttons yourself using an OBD jumper wire and the hazard switch procedure. This only programs lock, unlock, and trunk functions. It does not program the transponder chip, so you still need us for the immobilizer side.
No DIY programming available. The FAST Key smart system requires professional OBD-II tools and a PIN from the VIN. Ignition cycle tricks do not work and can cause BCM issues.
Same story as the 2008 to 2012, but with added server authentication. You need professional tools and an online PIN calculation. There is no shortcut here.
The Texas 4D chip in your 2016 or 2017 Lancer requires OBD-II programming with professional equipment. No self-programming method exists for this generation.

The 2008 to 2017 Lancer smart keys introduced 315 MHz proximity detection, a first for mainstream Mitsubishi sedans. That technology became the foundation for the proximity systems used in later models like the Outlander and Eclipse Cross.
