He was at a pho spot near Lake Los Carneros in Goleta when someone grabbed his jacket off the booth. Keys, wallet, phone. He borrowed the cashier's phone and called the police first, then his girlfriend, then me.
The 2012 Lancer was sitting in the lot with zero keys inside and a thief somewhere holding the original fob. His girlfriend called the dealer while they waited for the police. The dealer told her the car would need a tow, the earliest appointment was several business days out, and they were recommending a full security reset on top of the replacement because the stolen fob could still be used to access the doors. Their estimate came in well over what I charge, and that was before adding the tow.
I got there within the hour. All-keys-lost after a theft is a specific kind of job because wiping the key memory is not optional. You do it so the stolen fob becomes useless. I connected through the diagnostic port, cleared the existing fob data out of the immobilizer, and registered two new fobs from scratch. Then I cut the emergency insert blade and tested both fobs on doors and ignition before I packed up.
He drove home that night with two working keys. The stolen fob is electronically dead now. Once the key memory is wiped, the old fob is just plastic.
The dealer comparison was almost an afterthought by then. He had his car, his new keys, and the peace of mind that the stolen one couldn't do anything. That's the part that mattered most to him.
