There's a gym near Storke Ranch I pass on jobs all the time. A guy there had been fighting his 2014 Lancer for a few weeks before he called me. Some mornings the fob worked fine from across the parking lot. Some mornings he was standing right next to the door handle and nothing happened. He'd gotten used to using the mechanical backup blade just to get in.
He'd already swapped the CR2032. Twice, actually. Different brands. Still intermittent.
When I got to him, I popped the fob open on the trunk lid where he could watch. The battery contacts looked fine at a glance, but one of them had a hairline stress bend, probably from the second battery swap where someone got impatient with the case clip. The board itself had a faint residue line near one of the switch contacts, the kind you get when a little moisture found its way in and dried.
Cleaned the board contacts, straightened the battery clip, reseated the CR2032 correctly. Then I walked every function: door handle approach detection, all four buttons, start sequence. Everything came back clean.
He asked what the dealer would have charged to do what I just did. I told him the dealer probably wouldn't have done what I just did. They'd have sold him a new fob and scheduled a programming appointment. He laughed a little and said that was exactly what the service advisor had already suggested over the phone before he even brought it in.
He didn't need a new fob. He needed someone to actually look at the one he had.
