There's a property off Birnam Wood in Montecito where the driveways are long and the reception is patchy. A guy called me from there about a 2003 Lancer. He had one key, it had broken off at the bow, and the blade was stuck in the door lock. The head with the chip was just gone, sitting in a pocket somewhere.

I drove to Birnam Wood. Got the broken blade out of the door lock with extractors, decoded the cut from the lock cylinder, and had a new key blank cut to match on my mobile machine. Then came the part that actually matters on these: registering the transponder to the immobilizer. The 2003 Lancer does not have a self-programming sequence you can do with the ignition. It needs a tool to write the chip into the system.
Ran the registration through the OBD port, tested the start twice, tested the door lock. Done in the driveway. No tow, no appointment, no waiting around a dealer for days.
He mentioned what the dealer quoted. It was a lot. He paid a fraction of that, and the car was running before I left the property.
