Got a call from a guy in Upper Village, Montecito, standing next to a 2003 Lancer with the trunk open and a broken key in his hand. The blade had snapped right at the plastic head where it meets the housing. The transponder chip was still in the remaining half of the key head, which was good news, but the blade piece was stuck in the ignition cylinder.
He had already tried tweezers. Then needle-nose pliers. Then a magnet. The broken bit just spun in place.
I extracted the blade fragment from the ignition first. These MIT3 cylinders are forgiving if you go slow. Once it was out, I had a clean original to decode from, just in two pieces. Cut a new MIT9 blade on site, then moved to the transponder side. The 2003 Lancer runs a Mitsubishi immobilizer system with an ID46 crypto chip. I cloned the working chip from his broken key head into a fresh T14 transponder using my programmer. No need to touch the ETACS module when you have a working chip to clone from.
Key went in, turned, engine fired. He just stood there holding the two broken halves like he forgot he could put them down.
The whole thing took about 25 minutes on his driveway. A dealer would have wanted the car towed in, a new key ordered, and probably a week of waiting for the part.
