Got a call from a guy pulled over at a roadside spot near Heritage Valley Tourism Bureau in Fillmore. His 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer key had snapped right in the ignition. Half the blade stuck in the cylinder, the other half in his palm. He had already called another locksmith who quoted him a full ignition replacement over the phone without even seeing the car.
I pulled up, grabbed my MIT8 Lishi tool, and got to work on the broken fragment. The MIT8 fits the Mitsubishi flat keyway and lets me work around a snapped blade to slide it out without gouging the wafer surfaces. Took a few minutes of patient rocking, and the broken piece came free clean.
While I was in there, I decoded the lock wafers from the readings the Lishi gave me. Cut a fresh MIT8 blade on my mobile machine, then cloned the ID46 transponder chip through the OBD port using the existing immobilizer data on his ECU. The whole ignition cylinder was untouched. His original lock, his original housing, everything worked with the new key the same way it did before the blade broke.
He kept looking at the ignition like he expected to see damage. Nothing. No drill marks, no replaced parts. Just a new key in a lock that never needed to be torn apart. The other locksmith's destructive route would have cost him way more and left him with a mismatched cylinder.
