Over near Girsh Park in Goleta, a Lancer owner flagged me down for what she called "a cosmetic thing." Her words, not mine.
The OUC644M-KEY-N fob had the classic Mitsubishi shell failure. Cracked right along the seam behind the key ring loop, buttons peeling up at the edges, the whole thing wrapped in electrical tape like a field dressing. She had been holding it together for months.
I popped it open on her carport. The Hitag2 transponder board and the RF circuit inside were perfectly fine. No corrosion, no cracked solder joints. The MIT3 blade was worn but still reading clean when I verified it with my MIT8 Lishi. The problem was 100 percent the shell, which is the most common failure point on this generation of Mitsubishi remotes. The plastic just gets brittle.
Swapped the working electronics and battery contacts into a fresh shell, cut a new edge-cut blade to match, and tested all four buttons plus the mechanical backup in the driver door. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic. Push-button start caught on the first press.
She had already called the dealer. They quoted her for a full replacement, new programming, the whole thing, and told her to leave the car for a few hours. She did not need any of that. The internals were fine. Shell swap, fresh blade, done on site for a fraction of what they wanted.
