Downtown Fillmore, mid-afternoon. A woman called me from the parking area near her apartment saying her only key to her 2007 Mitsubishi Lancer had snapped on her. Not just worn out. The blade had broken off inside the door lock cylinder while she was trying to get in, and the fob housing had cracked apart in her hand. She was standing there holding the two pieces.

That situation sounds worse than it is, but it does require doing things in the right order.

First thing I did was extract the broken blade from the cylinder. Once that was clear, I could actually inspect the lock to decode the cut. The fob housing was split, but the transponder chip inside was undamaged. That mattered a lot. Because the chip was still readable, I could transfer it into a new shell rather than start from scratch with an all-keys-lost procedure, which takes longer and costs more.

I decoded the lock, cut two new blades, transferred her original chip into one fresh shell, and verified both keys started the car and that the remote functions were responding on the fob with the original chip. The second key went into her bag as a spare. She had not had a spare since she bought the car used.

She asked at the end what would have happened if the chip had cracked too. I told her honestly: longer job, more involved process. But it didn't, and we were done in under 40 minutes. The dealer was not part of her day at all.
