2005 Mitsubishi Lancer
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a transponder key and how does it work on my 2005 Lancer?

The key looks like a normal metal key but there's a small chip embedded in the plastic head. When you insert it and turn the ignition, the antenna ring around the cylinder reads that chip and sends the signal to the immobilizer. If the chip matches a registered code, the engine starts. If it doesn't match - wrong chip, unprogrammed blank, or a key that's been wiped from the system - the immobilizer blocks the start.

Q: How does the dealer cost compare to what you charge?

Dealers price the job in layers: the key blank, the programming labor billed as a full hour, and sometimes a diagnostic fee if it's an all-keys-lost situation. On a 2005 Lancer that math tends to land somewhere uncomfortable, especially if they're quoting a tow on top of it. We bring the equipment to you, skip the shop overhead, and don't pad the labor.

Q: I have one working key for my 2005 Lancer. Can I add a spare without going to the dealer?

Possibly. When at least one working key exists, some model-year Mitsubishis support an onboard add-a-key sequence using the ignition and the existing key. Whether that works on your specific Lancer depends on how the immobilizer was configured and whether the key memory still has open slots. The system has a cap on how many keys it will hold, and if that limit is already hit, a slot has to be cleared before a new one goes in.

Q: My 2005 Lancer cranks but won't start. Could it be the transponder?

It's one of the first things to check. If the engine cranks normally but refuses to fire, and there's a key-related warning showing on the dash, the immobilizer not recognizing the key is a real possibility. A chip that's cracked inside the key head, a damaged antenna ring around the ignition cylinder, or a key that got wiped somehow can all produce exactly that symptom. That said, cranks-but-no-start has a long list of causes.

2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

He was at the pho place in Heritage Valley when someone grabbed his jacket off the booth. Keys, wallet, phone. He borrowed the cashier's phone, called the police, then his girlfriend, then me.

His 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer was sitting in the lot and he had nothing. His girlfriend relayed what the dealer said: three to five business days, the car needed to be towed in, and they wanted to reprogram the full system because the stolen key could theoretically still be used. The estimate she read back to me was well over six hundred dollars before the tow.

I was there within the hour. All-keys-lost after a theft is one of those jobs where the sequence matters. First thing is wiping the key memory so the stolen key is electronically dead. I connected my scan tool, cleared the old key data out of the immobilizer, and registered two new keys from scratch. Because the key for this Lancer is a transponder turn-key with no remote, there's no fob pairing, no button matching - just the chip in the key head enrolled to the vehicle and the blade cut to the lock. I decoded the ignition and cut both keys on site.

He drove home that night. The stolen key is a piece of metal now - the immobilizer doesn't know it exists anymore. The dealer quote was a week away and a tow he didn't need. He needed someone in the lot that evening, and that's what he got.

Mitsubishi Lancer Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Why is Mitsubishi key replacement so expensive at the dealer?▼

A few things stack up. The transponder chip inside the key head has to be enrolled to your vehicle's immobilizer, and that enrollment requires diagnostic equipment and sometimes a PIN code pulled against your VIN. Dealers bill that as a flat labor hour even when the actual programming takes a fraction of that. Then there's the key blank itself, which carries a markup at the parts counter.
