Got a call from a guy pulled over near San Jose Creek in Goleta. His 2013 Mitsubishi Lancer key blade snapped right in the ignition. Half the blade stuck in the cylinder, the other half in his hand. He had already called another locksmith who quoted him a full ignition cylinder replacement over the phone without even looking at it.
I brought my MIT8 Lishi tool, which is made for Mitsubishi's flat keyway. Slid it in alongside the broken fragment and worked the piece out without scratching the wafer surfaces. Took a few minutes of patience, but the cylinder came out of it clean.
Then I decoded the lock directly from the wafer readings, cut a fresh MIT8 blade on the van, and programmed the new transponder chip through the OBD port. The ETACS module on these 2013 Lancers communicates with the immobilizer through the steering column antenna ring, part number 8637A017 on most trims. Once the new chip registered, the car started on the first turn.
His smart key remote, FCC ID OUC644M-KEY-N, was perfectly fine. The electronics never broke. He just needed a new blade and a fresh chip paired to his car.
No drilling. No cylinder swap. His original ignition works with the new key exactly like it did before the blade broke. The other locksmith's destructive approach would have run way more with parts and labor for a full cylinder replacement he never needed.
