2004 Mitsubishi Lancer
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How much more does it cost when I've lost every key versus just making a spare?

More, yes, but it's still manageable. When you have a working key, adding a spare is a faster job because we can use the existing key to help verify the system. When all keys are lost on a car like this, the immobilizer needs a full reset before new keys can be enrolled, and that takes longer and requires more from the diagnostic side of the job.

Q: Are aftermarket Lancer keys cheaper, and will they actually work?

Cheaper upfront, but Mitsubishis from this generation are genuinely picky about key blanks. There are documented cases on Lancer forums where owners bought an inexpensive blank, had it cut correctly, and still ended up with a key that cranked the car but triggered the alarm, or one that locksmiths could not get to complete programming. The cut was right. The blank was the problem. I've seen the same thing.

Q: My 2004 Lancer cranks but won't start after I had a key made somewhere else. What happened?

This is one of the more common complaints on Lancer forums from this era. Crank-no-start after a key replacement almost always means the transponder chip did not program correctly, or the blank used wasn't compatible with the immobilizer. The engine cranks because the key turns, but the immobilizer does not recognize the chip, so it cuts fuel and the car won't fire. If someone cut and programmed your key and this is what you got, the job isn't done.

Q: Can I program a replacement key for my 2004 Lancer myself at home?

No DIY sequence exists for the transponder on this vehicle. Unlike some domestic vehicles from the same era that had an onboard add-a-key procedure you could run through the ignition, the Lancer's immobilizer requires external programming equipment to enroll a new key. There's no button combination, no ignition cycling trick that registers a new transponder. You need a tech with the right tool on site.

2004 Mitsubishi Lancer Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy parked near Butterfly Beach in Montecito. It was late. He'd been at the beach earlier in the day, set his key down somewhere in the sand or the grass, and by the time he got back to his 2004 Lancer it was gone. Checked his bag, his pockets, the seat, the floor. Nothing.

He'd already called the dealer. They told him to tow it in and come back in a few days. He didn't want to leave his car on a dark street overnight, and honestly I don't blame him.

I asked him to read me the VIN off the base of the windshield on the driver's side. He found it, read it off, and I already knew what I needed before I hung up. I prepped the correct key blank and had everything ready when I pulled up.

Cut the key to his vehicle right there at the curb. Then programmed the transponder chip to his immobilizer. He turned the key, the car started, and he sat there for a second like he wasn't sure it was going to hold. It held.

He saved a serious amount compared to what the dealer quoted, and he didn't have to tow anything or wait two days. The VIN is what makes all of this fast. If you can read it to me before I leave, I arrive prepared instead of arriving with questions.

Mitsubishi Lancer Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace my 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer key?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer. Mitsubishi dealers for a transponder key replacement on a car this age can quote you multiples of what a qualified locksmith will charge, and you also have to tow it in if you have no working key. With EZ Car Keyz, the job is done on site, includes cutting and programming, and comes in at a fraction of what dealers in this area want. No tow. No appointment.
