Got a call around 10pm from a guy stuck in a shopping center lot off Coast Village Road in Montecito. His only key for a 2004 Lancer was gone. Pockets, car floor, steps retraced twice. Nothing. He was about to call a tow just to get the car home.

Under the shopping center lights I cut the blade to code off the VIN, generated the transponder signal, and registered it to his ETACS module through the OBD-II port. The whole thing ran maybe 25 minutes from the time I pulled up. The security light on his dash stopped blinking and the engine turned over clean.
He was calm by then. Earlier he had that voice people get when they think the night is about to cost them a tow plus a dealer visit plus a day without a car. Instead he drove home.
