The call came from Hollister Village, out near the eastern end of Goleta. Guy was parked in a lot, had been camping somewhere outside of town, and came back to a 2010 Lancer that would not acknowledge any key. He had one fob, and it was gone. Not in the car, not in his gear. Just gone. He had already called the dealer and heard the words "tow it in" before he called me.
The 2010 Lancer with the smart key system has no traditional ignition slot to fall back on for starting. Once all registered fobs are cleared from the module, the car sits. That is not a dead battery situation. That is an all-keys-lost job, and it needs the right diagnostic equipment to get into the body control module, wipe the old key data, and register a fresh fob.
I pulled up to the lot with my tools already set. The process on these involves accessing the module through the OBD port, clearing the existing key memory, and then registering the new four-button fob. The system accepted the registration cleanly on the first attempt. I handed him the fob, he pressed the start button, and the Lancer fired right up.
He asked me what the dealer would have charged on top of the tow. I told him to think about it in two separate numbers: the tow from a Goleta side street to a dealer, and then whatever the dealer quotes for the job itself. He did the math quietly and said he was glad he called first. I don't push the dealer comparison hard. It just tends to make itself.
