How Outlander Keys Changed Over 20 Years
First Generation (CU/CW)
This is where security got serious. Just kidding, it didn't. Your 2003 to 2006 Outlander uses a plain mechanical key with no transponder chip and no immobilizer system at all. You turn it, the car starts. No programming needed, no electronics to worry about. It is the simplest and cheapest Outlander key to replace.
Second Generation (CU/CW Facelift)
This is where security actually got serious. Mitsubishi added an ID46 transponder chip and their NATS immobilizer system, which means the car now talks to the key before it lets you start the engine. Your key has three buttons for lock, unlock, and panic, plus a standard blade. Programming requires OBD-II access, so this is no longer a hardware store job.
Third Generation (CX/CZ)
Push-button start arrived. Your Outlander now uses a smart key fob with proximity detection, a laser-cut emergency blade, and an ID46 or ID47 chip inside. The NATS immobilizer system got more advanced, and the blade switched to a laser-cut design that requires precision cutting equipment. We program these through the OBD-II port, and most jobs take under 40 minutes.
Fourth Generation (DJ/DK)
Mitsubishi kept the smart key system and tightened the encryption. Your fourth-gen Outlander still uses an ID46 or ID47 chip with push-button start and a laser-cut blade, but some 2023 PHEV models may require server authentication for programming. We handle most of these on-site through OBD-II, though we will verify your specific model before we roll out.
Which Key Does Your Outlander Use?
A traditional metal key with no chip and no remote buttons. The simplest Outlander key made. Any locksmith can cut one, and there is nothing to program.
A standard-cut key with an ID46 chip inside the head and three remote buttons. Your car will not start without the chip being recognized by the NATS immobilizer, so it needs professional programming.
A proximity smart key that stays in your pocket. Push the button, the car starts. The emergency blade inside is laser-cut, and the fob contains an ID46 or ID47 transponder chip. Requires OBD-II programming.
Same smart key concept as the third gen, but with tighter encryption. Still uses a laser-cut emergency blade and CR2032 battery. Some PHEV trims may need additional server verification during programming.
What to Expect Price-Wise
All prices include the key blank, cutting, programming, and testing; lockouts run $95 to $125.

Common Outlander Key Problems
Smart Key Battery Depletion
The CR2032 inside your smart key fob is the culprit behind most 'my key stopped working' calls. When dead, push-button start and remote lock/unlock both quit. Swap a fresh CR2032; if that fails, call (805) 790-8162 because the fob may need reprogramming.
OBD-II Programming Compatibility
First check on any 2007+ Outlander: is the programming tool actually talking to NATS? Mitsubishi's system is proprietary, and generic OBD-II scanners cannot reach it. We carry Autel IM608 and Xhorse VVDI Key Tool Plus because they support NATS.
Transponder Chip Failure
Your 2007-2012 Outlander key has an ID46 chip in the head, and years in hot cars around Simi Valley and Oxnard can fail it. Symptom looks like a dead battery: turn key, engine cranks, no fire. A new battery will not fix a fried chip. You need a new key.
Laser-Cut Blade Wear
Owners blame the smart key fob when the real problem is the emergency blade. On 2013+ Outlanders, the laser-cut blade inside the fob wears with manual-unlock use. A worn blade binds in the cylinder. We cut fresh on-site and test before leaving.
Can You Program an Outlander Key Yourself?
You can program the remote fob yourself using the DLC hazard switch method. This only covers lock, unlock, and panic buttons. There is no transponder chip to program on this generation, so the key itself just needs to be cut to fit.
No DIY option here. The ID46 transponder chip in your key must be programmed through the OBD-II port using professional diagnostic equipment that communicates with the NATS immobilizer.
The smart key system on your third-gen Outlander requires professional OBD-II programming. There is no documented self-programming procedure for this generation.
Advanced encryption and rolling codes make DIY programming impossible on these models. Professional equipment is required, and some 2023 PHEV trims may need dealer server authentication.

Did You Know?
Back in 2003, Mitsubishi set up a VIN structure for the Outlander that uses the WMI code JA4 for all generations manufactured in Japan. The 10th digit of your VIN indicates the model year, with 3 for 2003, 4 for 2004, and so on, cycling every 30 years. So technically, a 2033 Outlander would share the same year digit as the original 2003.
