Q: How long should a replacement smart key last on one of these?

The programming itself doesn't degrade. Once the fob is registered to your vehicle's security system, that relationship is stable. What actually wears out is the physical fob: the case cracks, the buttons get mushy, and the battery contacts can take a little corrosion over time. If the shell goes but the internal board is still good, a locksmith can often move that board into a new case without running a full registration again. You're just swapping the housing.

If it doesn't match, no amount of programming time is going to make it work reliably. I got the call around 7 in the evening. A mom was stuck in a pediatrician's parking lot in Ventura, her 2013 Outlander wouldn't start, and she had a sick kid strapped in the back seat.
