Over in Camino Real Park in Ventura, a woman called me around 7pm. Her kid had spiked a fever at the pediatrician and she needed to get home. The 2013 Outlander would not start in the lot.

I cracked the fob shell open on the hood. The circuit board had a hairline solder fracture right at the battery terminal, the kind you get from a key hitting a tile floor one too many times. The transponder chip was not making consistent contact.
Swapped in a new key, programmed it to the ETACS module, and the immobilizer accepted it first pass. Mitsubishi's registration sequence on the third-gen Outlander is pretty cooperative when you have the right diagnostic path.
From her call to engine running was about 45 minutes. She got the prescription filled and her kid home and in bed before 9. When a parent has a sick child and a dead car in a parking lot after hours, the only number that matters is minutes until the engine turns over.
