A muffler shop in Ventura called me on a Tuesday afternoon. Their customer had dropped his 2022 Outlander for exhaust work, and somewhere along the way the key situation became a problem. They'd already called a different locksmith. That locksmith hit an immobilizer fault during programming, got a rejection on the key registration, and left. Told the shop the module was probably bad.
The shop called me because the car was still sitting on their lift and the customer needed it back.
I pulled in with my bench programming setup, which is the tool for exactly this kind of situation. I pulled the module, read the data directly, and found the fault the previous attempt had left behind. It wasn't a bad module. It was a corrupted key registration table from a programming sequence that hadn't completed cleanly. That's fixable.
I cleared the fault, rebuilt the registration from scratch, and enrolled the new fob fresh. Four-button key, matching the factory FCC ID for this generation. The system accepted it on the first attempt once the slate was actually clean.
Reinstalled the module, ran through every button, tested the start, tested the door handles. Everything worked.
The shop owner watched most of it. He asked what the other locksmith did wrong. Honest answer: probably had the right intention but the wrong tool for when things go sideways. OBD-only access is fine until the module is already in a fault state. Then you need to go deeper.
The customer got his car back the same day. The dealer route would have been a flatbed tow, a multi-day wait, and a bill that would have stung a lot more.
