2008 Mitsubishi Outlander
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how does it work on the 2008 Outlander?

The fob for your 2008 Outlander is a smart key with four buttons and a CR2032 battery inside. It communicates with the vehicle's security system so the engine will only start when a registered fob is present. The fob also has a mechanical blade stored inside it for physical lock access if the battery dies or the electronics stop responding. The key has to be registered to your specific vehicle before it does anything.

Q: Why does Mitsubishi key programming take so long at the dealer?

It's not the programming itself. Once the tool is connected and the sequence runs, it moves quickly. The delay is overhead: billing practices that round up to full labor hours, appointment backlogs, and occasionally needing to escalate to technical support when something in the process doesn't go smoothly the first time. I've heard from owners who were sent home with an unprogrammed key because the dealer's session stalled and they ran out of time.

Q: My 2008 Outlander fob stopped working after I replaced the battery. What's going on?

Happens more than you'd think. A few things to check before assuming the fob is dead. First, make sure the CR2032 is seated flat and the contacts are making solid contact on both sides. If the battery shifted even slightly during reassembly, the circuit doesn't close properly and you get nothing. Second, look at the contacts themselves - if they got bent or compressed during prying, the new battery won't sit right no matter how it looks from the outside.

Q: Can I use just the mechanical blade inside my Outlander fob if the electronics fail?

For the door, yes. The blade stored inside the fob unlocks the door manually, and that part is purely mechanical. Starting the car is different. The security system has to recognize a registered fob before the engine will start, and the blade alone will not get you past that. With dead fob electronics you can get in but not drive until a replacement fob is programmed. Worth knowing before a Mandalay Beach parking lot at 6am.

2008 Mitsubishi Outlander Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Mandalay Beach, I pulled up to a house right around 7 in the morning. The owner had a 2008 Outlander, two kids, two jobs, and exactly one key. She'd been running on that single key for a couple of years because fitting a dealer visit into her week just never happened. She mentioned it like it was a normal thing to live with.

The fob was worn. The buttons still worked, but the casing had a crack along the edge and she'd taped it together at some point. She wanted a spare so that if this one finally gave out, her whole morning routine didn't collapse with it.

I connected through the OBD port on the driveway while she got the kids ready inside. The registration process for the 2008 Outlander smart key goes through diagnostic equipment - there's no shortcut. New fob, paired to the vehicle, tested on every button and both doors before I knocked to let her know it was done.

She came out, tested it herself, went back inside. The whole thing was done before she left for work.

She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a price for a single key that made her put it off for two years. I handed her two keys. She saved a good chunk and didn't lose a morning.

Mitsubishi Outlander Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does a Mitsubishi dealer take for a key replacement on a 2008 Outlander?▼

The actual programming once a technician is connected takes minutes. The problem is everything wrapped around it. Dealers typically bill a full labor hour for key work regardless of how long the procedure runs. Scheduling is its own issue - some owners have reported waiting weeks just to get an appointment at busy service departments. And if anything in the process requires a call to technical support, that wait time is on you.
