2005 Mitsubishi Outlander
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What kind of key does the 2005 Mitsubishi Outlander use?

It uses a remote head key -- the blade and the two-button remote are one molded unit. There is a transponder chip built into the head of the key that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer when you start the car, and the remote portion handles lock and unlock. The battery for the remote is a CR2032 and lives inside the key head. Losing one of these means replacing the whole unit, not just a fob or just a blade.

Q: Why does the dealer process take so long on Mitsubishi keys?

It's not the programming itself -- that part moves fast once they're connected. The delay is everything around it. Scheduling backlogs, labor charges billed as a full hour regardless of actual time on the job, and occasionally needing to escalate to outside support when a configuration doesn't cooperate. On a 2005 Outlander specifically, the vehicle is old enough that not every dealer tech is drilling these regularly.

Q: Can I buy a replacement key online and just have someone program it?

Yes, but check the details before you buy. The 2005 Outlander uses a specific remote head key with a matching transponder, and the factory FCC ID on the fob needs to match what your vehicle accepts. Aftermarket units that list "fits Mitsubishi" broadly are sometimes cut for a different profile or carry the wrong transponder type, and that means the key won't program no matter how good the equipment is.

Q: My 2005 Outlander starts fine but the lock and unlock buttons stopped working. Do I need a new key?

Not necessarily. On the remote head key, the remote functions and the transponder run on different systems. If the car starts, the transponder chip is fine. Dead remote buttons almost always point to the CR2032 -- these batteries test at full voltage with a meter and still fail under load, so "I just changed the battery" doesn't always rule it out. Check that the contacts inside the key head are clean and making solid contact with the battery.

2005 Mitsubishi Outlander Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was out in Nyeland Acres on a Tuesday when a woman flagged me down near the Dollar Tree on Saviers. She had her 2005 Outlander, a warm afternoon, and a key that had stopped working the locks the day before. She'd already bought a CR2032 at the checkout counter inside and swapped it herself. Lock and unlock still did nothing.

She told me the dealer said to bring it in, that they'd need to look at it, and that she was looking at a wait just for the appointment. She didn't have that kind of time.

I popped the remote head open on the hood of my van. The old battery had left a little residue on one of the contacts -- not enough to see clearly without looking for it, but enough to kill the connection. Cleaned it up, seated the new CR2032 she'd already bought, snapped it back together.

Lock worked. Unlock worked. Both buttons confirmed.

Then I tested the start, walked the ignition twice, and let her do it herself so she knew it wasn't a fluke.

The whole job took less time than it would have taken her to fill out the dealer's intake form. She mentioned the dealer quote on her way back to her car -- I just told her to save the number in case she needed it for something else.

Mitsubishi Outlander Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does it actually take to replace or program a key for a 2005 Outlander?▼

The programming itself on a 2005 Outlander is not a long process. Once connected through the diagnostic port, registering the transponder to the immobilizer takes a few minutes. Cutting the blade to the vehicle adds a little time, but the whole job is typically done in under 30 minutes on site. The dealer timeline is different. You're looking at scheduling an appointment, drop-off, and a labor charge billed as a full hour even when the actual work is faster.
