Got a text one afternoon from a guy over on Saviers Road in Oxnard. His 2004 Outlander was parked behind the shop where he works, and his only key had finally snapped. The blade broke clean off inside the driver door lock. The remote shell, the part that holds the OUCG8D-525M-A board, had been cracked for months. He'd been nursing it with electrical tape. That morning the tape lost.
When I pulled up, he was sitting on a milk crate next to the Outlander holding two pieces of his key like a broken wishbone. He just looked at them and said, "I knew this was coming."
I extracted the broken blade tip from the cylinder, decoded the lock wafers right there, and cut a fresh MIT8 blade on the van. Then I swapped his existing remote board, the one with MR587983 on the back, into a new shell so the lock and unlock buttons would actually sit right again. No programming needed because the remote was already paired to his receiver module and the key blade carries no transponder on these first-gen Outlanders.
He clicked the remote, doors locked, clicked again, unlocked. Turned the key, engine fired. The whole thing took maybe 20 minutes.
He kept looking at the fresh key like he forgot what one was supposed to look like without tape on it.
