Got a call out of East Simi Valley on a Saturday afternoon. Guy was standing in his driveway, 2012 Outlander Sport, fob in hand, and the car wasn't responding to anything. Doors wouldn't unlock, no response on the touch handles, nothing.

He had already gone to the auto parts store and put a fresh CR2032 in it. Still dead. He figured the fob itself had failed and called me expecting to buy a whole new smart key.

I popped the fob open on the hood of my van. The new battery was in there, but the positive contact had a slight outward bend from being pried open wrong. It was barely touching the cell. I straightened the clip, cleaned both contacts with a dry cloth, reseated the battery, and snapped it back together.

Then I walked it. Touch unlock on the driver handle, passenger handle, every button in sequence, and a start cycle. Everything came back clean.

He looked at me like he wasn't sure if he should feel relieved or embarrassed. I told him it happens constantly. Fob hardware is simple, but that contact bend is easy to miss.

He did not need a new smart key. He needed ten minutes and someone who actually looked before assuming.
