First Years, Flip Key with ID46
A 3-button flip key with a Philips ID46 transponder chip inside. That chip talks to the SKIM (Sentry Key Immobilizer Module) every time you turn the ignition, and if it does not get the right response, the van will not start. Programming goes through the OBD-II port under the dash, and the key needs to be pre-coded before it will pair to the Marelli BCM in these early models.
Same Key, BCM Variant Split
A flip key identical to the 2015-2016, still running the Philips ID46 chip and SKIM immobilizer. The difference is under the hood: Ram started using either a Marelli or Delphi BCM depending on the build. That matters because the wrong programming approach for the wrong BCM variant means the key will not work. We verify your BCM type by VIN before we touch anything.
Final Year, Same Platform
A 3-button flip key with the same Philips ID46 chip and SKIM system as every ProMaster City before it. The 2019 was the last model year, and the OEM key part number (68334510AA) confirms the hardware stayed consistent. Same OBD-II programming, same pre-coding requirement, same result in your driveway.
Which Key Does Your ProMaster City Use?
A folding key with three buttons: lock, unlock, and a dedicated cargo door button. The blade flips out when you press the release, and the Philips ID46 chip is embedded inside the housing.
Same flip key design as the earlier years. Looks identical, works identical, but the BCM behind the scenes may be a Delphi variant instead of Marelli. That is our problem to sort out, not yours.
The final year kept the same 3-button flip key. OEM part 68334510AA. If you are replacing a worn-out original, this is the key you need cut and programmed.

Key Fob Pre-Coding Requirement
A new aftermarket flip key gets programmed, and the remote buttons do nothing. ProMaster City keys (2015-2019) must be pre-coded with a TM PRO tool before pairing to your BCM. Tools like the Tango do not work reliably. We pre-code every key first.
Transponder Programming via BCM
Your ProMaster City has a Marelli or Delphi BCM, and the wrong approach triggers an immobilizer lockout. The van will not start at all even with a correctly cut key. We pull your VIN and verify the BCM type first. Stuck in Simi Valley? Call (805) 790-8162.
Cargo Door Button Failure
Before recommending a full fob replacement, we check whether the issue is the button or the receiver. On 2016-2019 ProMaster City vans, the third button (sliding/cargo door) fails earlier than lock/unlock. If membrane is worn, fix is a new fob. Sometimes the cargo actuator is the real culprit.
Can You Program a ProMaster City Key Yourself?
No self-programming procedure exists for the Ram ProMaster City. The Philips ID46 chip must be pre-coded with TM PRO equipment, and the transponder must be learned through OBD-II with a PIN retrieved from the BCM. This is a professional-only job, no shortcuts.
