2016 Ram Promaster City
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is an emergency key and what does it do on my 2016 ProMaster City?

On the ProMaster City, the emergency key is a metal key blade cut to your vehicle. It operates the door locks and the ignition mechanically. It is the backup you use when a fob battery dies or the fob itself stops communicating. Because it is cut to your specific vehicle, you cannot duplicate it at a hardware store the way you would a house key.

Q: What equipment do you use to make a replacement key for this van?

For a ProMaster City emergency key, the main tool is a quality key cutting machine that can produce an accurate cut from the VIN code or from a lock decode. I carry the decoding tools to read the lock directly if the VIN route is not available for any reason. The key blank itself has to be the right profile for the vehicle.

Q: I need a replacement key but I have zero keys left. Can you still get into the van and make one?

Yes. All-keys-lost on a ProMaster City where the key is a mechanical emergency-style cut is actually one of the more manageable scenarios. I can pick or decode the door lock to determine the correct cut, then produce a working key on site. No tow to the dealer, no leaving the vehicle overnight. The lock decode method is reliable on these vans and gives me the exact cut your key needs to be without a donor key present.

Q: My spare ProMaster City key got bent and does not turn smoothly. Can it be fixed or does it need to be replaced?

Replace it. A bent or worn key blade can damage the lock cylinder over time, and if it breaks off inside the ignition or a door lock you are looking at a more involved job. Bring the damaged key when you call, because if it still has a readable profile I can use it to confirm the correct cut before making the new one. Catching this early, while the lock is still working, keeps the job simple.

2016 Ram Promaster City Emergency Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy parked at Surfers Point on a Tuesday morning. He had been out early, watching the surf, and when he went to leave he realized his only key was sitting on the passenger seat, visible through the glass. No spare anywhere.

The ProMaster City has a rear cargo area with hinged barn doors, and he had already walked around twice hoping one of them was unlocked. They were not.

I pulled up with the van, got the door open without any damage, and then cut him a replacement key on site. He stood there watching the whole thing, which I always let people do. He asked if the new key would work right away without any dealer visit. Yes, it would.

We tested it in the ignition, tested the door locks, made sure everything worked before I packed up. He mentioned the dealer had told him to bring it in and leave it for a day. That was not going to be his Tuesday.

Total time on site was well under thirty minutes. He drove away to grab coffee before noon. He also said he was going to get a spare cut that same day, which is the right call.

Ram Promaster City Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

A few things to watch for. If they will not give you a real estimate for your specific vehicle over the phone, that is a red flag. If the price changes dramatically once they show up, that is a bait and switch. Ask them directly if they have worked on ProMaster City vehicles before and what the process looks like. A legitimate locksmith can answer that without hesitating.
