How ProMaster Key Security Has Changed
Pre-Gateway Era
Ram kept things relatively straightforward here with a SKIM immobilizer and OBD-II programming. Your ProMaster uses a remote head key with a ID46 transponder chip (PCF7936) that talks to the Sentry Key module near the ignition. One important note: on 2014 through 2016 models, the battery must be disconnected before programming or you risk frying a module.
Gateway Era
This is where FCA added a secure gateway module that blocks unauthorized access to the vehicle's programming port. Your ProMaster still uses a remote head key with SKIM, but now we need a 12+8 FCA bypass cable just to talk to the system. Without that cable, the van rejects every programming attempt. Same key style, much tighter security.
Proximity Update
Ram finally brought push-button start to the ProMaster (starting in 2022). Your 2022-2024 key is now a proximity smart fob (FCC M3N-40821302) with the HITAG AES (PCF7953M) chip, which lets you start without inserting anything. Programming requires both gateway bypass and server authentication, plus physical access to the RFH module behind the overhead console.
Which Key Does Your ProMaster Use?
A traditional key with built-in remote buttons. You insert it into the ignition to start the van. The transponder chip inside communicates with the SKIM module to verify it is the right key.
Looks and works the same as the earlier remote head key, but the van now has a secure gateway module protecting the programming port. Same key in your hand, different process to program it.
A smart fob that stays in your pocket. The van detects it and lets you push a button to start. There is still an emergency blade tucked inside for when the battery dies.
What Your ProMaster Key Costs
Price includes the key blank, cutting, programming, and testing; lockouts run $95 to $125.

Common ProMaster Key Problems
Battery Disconnect Failure
On 2014-2016 ProMasters, the SKIM module is sensitive to voltage spikes during programming. If someone tries without disconnecting the battery first, it damages the module. We always disconnect before touching the OBD port. An extra minute saves a costly repair.
Secure Gateway Access Denied
Your 2020+ ProMaster flashed 'access denied' on the scan tool. Normal, not broken. FCA added a secure gateway module that blocks unauthorized OBD-II access. We carry the 12+8 FCA bypass cable on every call, so we get past it on-site in Oxnard or Simi Valley.
Proximity Enrollment Errors
The 2023-2024 ProMaster smart key requires gateway bypass and server authentication, plus the RFH (Radio Frequency Hub) behind the overhead console for some procedures. We physically access the module and verify RF communication before calling the job done.
Pre-Coding Omission
We check this first on every ProMaster call. The transponder in your key blank must be pre-coded with a KC100 or KC501 before it touches the OBD port. Skip that and the immobilizer rejects every time. Almost always why other locksmiths fail.
Can You Program a ProMaster Key Yourself?
No self-programming option exists for these years. The SKIM immobilizer requires professional OBD-II tools and a pre-coded transponder key. On 2014 through 2016 models, you also need to disconnect the battery first to avoid module damage.
The secure gateway module blocks all OBD-II access without a 12+8 bypass cable and professional programming equipment. There is no DIY path here.
These require gateway bypass and server authentication, plus on some configurations physical access to the RFH module behind the overhead console. Professional tools like AutoProPAD or SmartPro are mandatory. No DIY workaround exists.

Did You Know?
Starting in 2020, Ram added FCA's secure gateway module to the ProMaster. This single change meant that the straightforward OBD-II direct access locksmiths had used since 2014 no longer worked. Every programming attempt now requires a specialized 12+8 bypass cable just to communicate with the van's computer.
