2017 Ram Promaster
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What kind of key does the 2017 Ram ProMaster use?

It uses a remote: a fob with a transponder chip inside and three buttons for remote functions. The chip has to be registered to your specific van through the OBD port using manufacturer-level diagnostic software. The fob also takes a CR2032 battery. Cutting a blade and handing it to you does not cover the full job here. The programming step is what makes it start.

Q: Why does the dealer take so long on ProMaster key jobs?

It is not the programming itself. That part runs in minutes once the software is connected and the server responds. The delay comes from dealership workflow: the repair order process, the service queue, the need for a tech who is certified on the manufacturer's diagnostic platform, and parts availability. If the fob needs to be ordered, that adds days.

Q: My ProMaster fob got wet and now the van won't respond to it. Is the fob gone or can it be dried out?

Water damage to a remote is usually permanent once it gets into the circuit board. The corrosion starts fast and the internal components are not rated for submersion. You might get intermittent responses for a day or two while it dries, but owners who wait on a "maybe it will come back" fob tend to end up with a total failure at the worst possible time. The right move is to treat a wet fob as a dead fob.

Q: Can I buy a replacement fob online and just have someone program it, or does it have to come from the dealer?

An aftermarket or remanufactured fob carrying the same factory FCC ID as the original can be programmed by a mobile locksmith with the right equipment. It does not have to come from the dealer parts counter. The programming binds the fob to your van's VIN through the OBD port, and that step works the same whether the fob came from a dealer or a reputable aftermarket source.

2017 Ram Promaster Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Down in The Avenue, a logistics coordinator at a warehouse off the main stretch runs inbound shipments from before sunrise until late afternoon. His 2017 Ram ProMaster was his operation, and when the fob took a puddle dive loading a trailer one morning, the van went from asset to problem fast.

He could not tow it. Could not leave during receiving hours. Could not wait on a dealer appointment that was days out and came with a tow bill on top. He called me while he was still standing on the dock.

I pulled into the warehouse lot during his mid-morning break. Plugged into the OBD port, connected to the manufacturer's server, and ran the key registration sequence. His water-damaged fob was still sitting in the system. I cleared it, added the replacement remote with the matching dealer part number, and ran through all three buttons plus ignition start.

He was back at the dock before his break was over. The van never left the lot. The dealer comparison was something he brought up, not me, but the number he quoted made clear he had already done the math before I arrived. Saved a good chunk and kept his operation running.

Ram Promaster Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does a Ram ProMaster key replacement actually take at the dealer?▼

The hands-on programming work, once a tech is at the vehicle with the software connected, is measured in minutes. What takes the rest of the day is everything around it: writing the repair order, waiting in the service queue, logging into the manufacturer's diagnostic server, and sourcing the fob from parts inventory. If the fob is not on the shelf, you are looking at days, not hours.
