4th Generation (D2 Heavy Duty)
Your 2013 to 2018 Ram 3500 uses a remote head key with a Texas 4D (ID 46) transponder chip inside. That means you turn a physical key in the ignition, but the truck will not start unless the chip talks to the SKREEM immobilizer module first. We program these through the OBD-II port under your dash, usually in about 20 to 35 minutes.
5th Generation (D2 Heavy Duty)
Ram made a big jump here. Your 2019 to 2021 uses a smart key with an ID47 chip and push-button start. The immobilizer switched to an RF Hub system, and programming now requires server authentication on top of OBD-II access. There is also a high-security emergency blade tucked inside the fob for backup entry.
5th Generation Facelift
Your 2022 to 2024 Ram 3500 keeps the same ID47 smart key and RF Hub immobilizer, but the Secure Gateway Module got tighter. Programming still goes through OBD-II with server auth, and the high-security blade is there for emergencies. These take a bit longer because of the gateway bypass, but we handle it on-site.
Which Key Does Your Ram 3500 Use?
A traditional key with buttons built into the head. You insert it into the ignition to start the truck. The transponder chip inside communicates with your SKREEM module every time you turn it.
Keep this in your pocket and press the button to start. The emergency blade hidden inside the fob lets you unlock the door manually if the battery dies.

Key Fob Battery Drain
First check on a 2019-2024 Ram 3500 that will not unlock or start: the CR2032 inside the fob. Heavy remote start and passive entry drain these fast. Swapping every few months? The fob may need reprogramming to stop excessive draw.
Transponder Sync Loss
On 2013-2018 models, a low-voltage event during a jump knocks the Texas 4D transponder out of sync with the SKREEM. Key turns, starter cranks, engine will not fire. We reprogram the transponder through OBD-II and you are back on the road.
Proximity Sensor Failure
Your 2022-2024 Ram 3500 says 'key not detected' with the fob in hand. Common in Simi Valley and Camarillo on higher trims with proximity entry. The RF Hub sensor can lose calibration, or Secure Gateway may need a reset. We diagnose on-site first.
Remote Start Malfunction
Signal interference is usually the culprit. Your Ram 3500 remote start engages then shuts off, or will not engage. Common across 2013-2024, often from nearby electronics, a weak fob battery, or lost programming. We test signal strength and reprogram if needed.
Can You Program a Ram 3500 Key Yourself?
You can program the remote lock and unlock buttons yourself using an aftermarket OBD-II programmer tool, but this does NOT program the transponder chip. Your truck still will not start with a new key unless a professional programs the Texas 4D chip through OBD-II.
