He runs a small landscaping operation out of a 2024 Ram 3500 with a service body bolted to the frame. Steel sides, locking compartments the whole length of the bed, the kind of build that turns a pickup into a rolling tool chest. He'd had the truck upfitted a few months back and never thought twice about the key until he walked out of a supply house and got nothing. No click, no flash, no response from the fob beyond arm's reach. He was standing right next to the truck and the proximity wouldn't see him.
He figured it was a dead fob. Replaced the CR2032 himself at the auto parts store next door. Same result. That's when he called me.
I met him in the parking lot. First thing I did was have him walk the fob about thirty feet from the truck, well clear of the steel service body, and try lock and unlock. Both worked fine at range. Then I had him walk toward the truck and watch where it dropped out. It dropped out right around the back corner of the cab, exactly where the service body starts.
The steel enclosure was acting like a Faraday cage around the rear antennas. The fob was fine. The CR2032 he'd just put in was fine. This was purely a shielding problem from the upfit.
We talked through his options: repositioning the antenna lead if his installer was willing to reroute it, or just adapting his habit to approach from the front where the cab antenna catches the signal unobstructed. He went with the habit change for now and said he'd loop in his upfitter later.
No programming, no new key. Fifteen minutes of honest diagnosis. He called me back two weeks later for an actual spare key job, which is a different story.
