2015 Ram Promaster City
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long will a replacement emergency blade last?

A properly cut metal key is as durable as the original. The common failure point owners report is the fob housing itself - the release button for the blade can wear or crack with regular job-site use, which is exactly the kind of abuse these cargo vans see. If the blade is sitting loose in a damaged housing, it gets nicked or bent over time.

Q: What if the replacement key stops working after a few weeks?

Call me. A mechanical blade either turns the lock or it does not, and if it stops working it is usually one of two things: the cut shifted because the blank was soft, or the lock cylinder itself has wear or debris. Both are diagnosable on site. I test the key in the cylinder before I leave, so if it is working when I go, it should keep working. If something changes, that is covered.

Q: My fob battery is dead and the blade is stuck - how do I get into the van?

There is a mechanical release button on the fob body that drops the blade out even with a dead battery. It is a small button, usually on the side or back of the housing depending on the fob version. Press and hold it, and the blade swings or slides free. That blade works the driver door lock cylinder independent of any electronics.

Q: Can I cut a Promaster City emergency blade at a hardware store or do I need a locksmith?

Hardware stores can cut it if they stock the correct blank profile, which is not a given. The Promaster City lock is based on a European-origin design and the blank profile is not as common in a typical hardware store key cabinet as a domestic truck key. If they have the right blank and a working machine, the cut itself is simple. The risk is a mismatched blank or a worn cutting wheel that leaves a sloppy key.

2015 Ram Promaster City Emergency Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

There is a parking lot off Ferro Drive near Serra Cross Park where a contractor parks his work van. He called me on a Tuesday morning because he had locked his key fob inside the Promaster City the night before and the fob battery was dead anyway, so the keyless entry was not going to help even if he could reach it.

His spare was at a house across town. He had a job starting in two hours.

I drove up, got eyes on the van, and we talked through what he actually needed. He did not need a new fob programmed. He did not need anything electronic touched. He needed the door open and a replacement blade cut so he had a working key in his hand before I left. That is the whole job on an emergency key - decode or reference the cut, make the blade, verify it turns the cylinder and opens the lock.

I had him back in the van in under twenty minutes. He made his job with time to spare.

The dealer would have wanted the van towed in and had him wait on parts. He saved a good chunk just by calling the right person first.

Ram Promaster City Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket key blanks on Ram vehicles?▼

For the Promaster City emergency blade, the priority is matching the correct key blank profile to the lock. The Promaster City uses a specific blade profile tied to the Fiat-derived lock cylinders on this platform, so getting the blank right matters more than the brand name on the packaging. We verify the correct blank before we head out. Aftermarket blanks cut to spec on the right profile work fine for a mechanical key.
