2019 Ram Promaster City
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is an emergency key and why does the 2019 Promaster City use one?

The emergency key is the physical metal blade that lives inside the remote fob body. On the Promaster City, the fob and the key are separate things. The blade gets released by pressing a small button on the fob housing, and it is what you actually insert into the door lock or ignition cylinder. It is called an emergency key because most owners use the remote to lock and unlock the van without ever touching the blade.

Q: What equipment do you use to cut and service keys for this van?

For the Promaster City emergency key, the main job is accurate cutting. I use a quality key machine and either pull the key code or decode the lock cylinder on site to get the cut right before the first attempt. I also carry the correct key blank profile for this van so there is no guessing or substituting a close-enough blank. The work happens at your location, not a shop, so you are not towing or waiting.

Q: My only key for the Promaster City was lost. Can you make one without the original?

Yes. All-keys-lost on these vans is a standard call for me. Without an original to decode directly, I work from the lock cylinder itself. I can decode the ignition or door lock on site and cut a working blade to match. You do not need to have the original key present, and you do not need to tow the van anywhere. The job gets done where the van is sitting.

Q: Can I get a copy of the emergency key blade made at a hardware store or a big box retailer?

Probably not well. The blade profile on the Promaster City is not the kind of common key a hardware store kiosk stocks. Even if a shop claims they can cut it, a blade that is cut slightly out of spec will feel stiff, wear the cylinder faster, or refuse to turn at all. Getting it wrong once can make a bad situation worse. A properly decoded and cut key from someone who works these vans regularly is worth the difference.

2019 Ram Promaster City Emergency Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A mechanic over at a salvage yard near Ventura Harbor had been moving a 2019 Ram Promaster City through the rows all morning. Somewhere between a stack of bumpers and a line of stripped pickups, his only key dropped out of his pocket. He retraced his steps twice through the yard. Nothing.

His van was sitting dead in the middle of the lot. He needed it to keep working, and the yard was not going to pause operations around a stranded cargo van.

I decoded his lock cylinder on site and cut a replacement blade to match. Fit the ignition, turned clean on the first try. He was back to moving vehicles around the yard within about thirty minutes of my arrival.

The dealer conversation never really came up. He just needed it done fast, on the spot, without waiting days for a parts order. That is the whole job sometimes.

Ram Promaster City Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

A few things stand out fast. If they will not give you a real estimate for your specific van over the phone, that is your first warning. If the quote changes dramatically once they arrive, that is a bait and switch. A legitimate locksmith working on a 2019 Ram Promaster City should be able to tell you exactly what kind of key the van takes and what the job involves before they ever leave their vehicle.
