How Telluride Key Technology Has Changed Over the Years
Smart Key (2020-2022)
Every Telluride from this period uses a 3-button proximity smart key with a transponder chip and push-button start across most trims. The factory immobilizer requires OBD-II programming with server authentication before the engine will run, which means there is no workaround and no shortcut. A new key has to be properly paired to the vehicle's computer by someone with the right professional equipment.
Smart Key, Facelift (2023-2024)
The facelift Telluride carries the same 3-button smart key and CR2032 battery as earlier models. Kia added Digital Key 2 as an option on certain trims, using NFC and Bluetooth through a compatible phone. The factory immobilizer and programming method stayed the same, though: OBD-II with server authentication, professional equipment required. Nothing about the physical key changed.
Smart Key, Major Update (2025)
The 2025 Telluride adds remote start as a standard feature on the smart key fob and brings full Digital Key 2 support with NFC, Bluetooth, and ultra-wideband. The underlying security setup did not change from prior years. OBD-II programming with server authentication is still required to pair a new key, and the fob itself still runs on a CR2032 battery with the same 3-button layout.

Common Telluride Key Problems We See in San Diego
Smart Key Fob Battery Drain
When a Telluride stops responding to the fob, the first thing we check is the CR2032 battery. These drain faster than most owners expect, particularly when remote start gets used regularly. The proximity sensors are always listening in the background, and that steady draw can wear through a coin cell battery in as little as six months. A fresh CR2032 resolves the problem the large majority of the time.
Transponder Recognition Failure
A key that does not start the engine is not always a broken key. Sometimes the factory immobilizer loses sync with the transponder chip, which can happen after a battery swap or during the kind of heat San Diego sees in summer inland areas like El Cajon or Santee. The fix is an OBD-II reset to re-pair the transponder chip to your Telluride's computer. We handle that on-site, wherever you are.
Proximity Sensor Interference
Push-button start is not responding, but the battery is fine and the fob is right in your hand. This is a proximity sensor issue seen on 2023-2025 Tellurides in crowded lots and near large metal structures, common in areas like downtown San Diego or Mission Valley parking garages. Other wireless signals and nearby metal can disrupt the short-range communication between your fob and the door sensors. Moving a few feet often gets you in, but if the problem keeps repeating, the antenna ring may need a closer look.
Can You Program a Telluride Key Yourself?
No DIY option exists for 2020-2022 Tellurides. The smart key requires OBD-II programming with server authentication and PIN code extraction. Kia did not build any on-board self-programming procedure into these vehicles, so this is a professional-only job every time.
The facelift models follow the same rules. Server authentication and dealer-grade programming equipment are required to pair a new smart key. No on-board procedure was added with the facelift update.
Kia did not introduce any self-programming capability for 2025 either. You still need professional equipment with Kia server access to pair a new smart key to this vehicle, same as every Telluride before it.
