E36 M3: Texas 4C Transponder

1999

Standalone transponder key on the 1999 E36 M3 with a Texas 4C chip in the head. No buttons built in, no integrated remote. The chip talks to the EWS immobilizer through a ring antenna wrapped around the ignition cylinder, and without that handshake the engine never fires. Remote fob is a separate piece if you have one at all.

E46 M3 (Early): ID44 Chip, EWS3

2000

The 2000 M3 jumped to the E46 platform and BMW upgraded the transponder to an ID44 chip on the EWS3 immobilizer. Key and remote are still separate units. Transition year, so we always verify the exact EWS variant over OBD before any work begins.

E46 M3: Remote Head Key, ID46 Chip

2001-2005

M3s from 2001 through 2005 use a 3-button remote head key with an ID46 transponder chip and a CR2032 cell. BMW merged the blade and remote into one diamond-shaped fob running on the more advanced EWS3.1 immobilizer. OBD-II access and specialized tools are non-negotiable. No DIY shortcuts on this generation.

EWS Module Failure

M3 cranks but refuses to fire? First check is the EWS module itself. We plug in and read module status over OBD-II before recommending. If gone, replacement plus full key resync, handled on-site in La Jolla or El Cajon.

My 2003 BMW M3 key won't start the car anymore, but the remote lock/unlock works fine. What's wrong? ▼

Straight talk: the remote and the transponder are independent systems, so one can work while the other fails. Almost always an EWS synchronization issue. The EWS module may have invalidated your key after multiple failed start attempts as a theft deterrent. First thing to try is leaving the key in the ignition for 15 to 30 minutes to let the system attempt automatic EWS-to-DME resync. If that fails, call (619) 876-1271. We bring diagnostic tools that resync the key immediately on-site, or if the transponder chip itself is dying, we cut and program a replacement right there.

I lost one key to my 1999 BMW M3 and need a replacement. How many more keys can I get? ▼

Your 1999 M3 shipped with 4 keys programmed into the EWS module, and the system supports up to 10 slots total. Once those 10 slots are used, no more keys can be added without replacing the EWS module entirely, which runs $500 to $800. Caveat: previous owners may have already burned through some slots. What's the difference between the master key and valet key on my E36 M3? ▼

Breakdown for your E36 M3: factory-issued four keys total. Two master keys (one with a built-in light, one without, otherwise functionally identical), one grey valet key, and one plastic spare/wallet key. Valet key fires the engine and opens the doors but cannot open the trunk or glovebox; that is the one for parking attendants. Master keys give full access. All four carry the same EWS transponder chip, so all four start the car. The only difference is which physical locks they can open.

Can I program a new key myself, or do I have to go to the dealer? ▼

No, this one is not a DIY job. The BMW M3 from 1999 to 2005 runs the EWS immobilizer system, and BMW never built a self-programming procedure for it. You need a dealer or a locksmith with EWS programming tools. Good news: you do not need the dealer. We carry VVDI2 and Autel IM608 on every truck, same caliber gear the dealer runs.
