Out in San Pasqual Valley, off the road where the cell signal comes and goes and the nearest dealer is a solid drive away, a woman called me about her 2004 BMW M3. She had one key. She had always had one key. The previous owner handed it over at the sale and that was that.
The shell had cracked along the seam, the blade was bent just enough that she had to jiggle it every time, and the buttons had stopped responding months ago. She had been living with it. Then the blade broke off in the door lock on her way back from a morning run, and that was the end of that plan.
I drove out to her. The car was sitting in the driveway, blade fragment lodged in the lock cylinder, fob housing in two pieces on the passenger seat. She had kept both halves, which helped.
I extracted the blade fragment from the cylinder first, then decoded the lock to get the key cut data. The transponder chip inside the broken housing was still intact, which matters a lot on an all-keys-lost situation because it let me work with what was already registered to the vehicle rather than starting from scratch.
I programmed two new remote head keys, tested both for remote function and for start, and confirmed the immobilizer was accepting them cleanly. She went from zero working keys to two, on site, in under an hour.
The dealer had given her a number over the phone that made her pause long enough to look for other options. I was the other option. She saved a good chunk, and she did not have to tow the car anywhere.
