How BMW 4 Series Key Security Has Evolved
F32 Generation (Pre-Facelift)
Pre-facelift F32, F33, and F36 cars run on the EWS4.4 immobilizer with an ID44 (PCF7952) transponder chip inside a 3-button proximity smart key. Push button start, hands-free entry, and a hidden high-security emergency blade folded into the fob. Programming runs through OBD-II with BMW-specific tooling, no consumer-grade method.
F32 LCI Facelift
The mid-cycle facelift jumped the architecture to a CAS4+ module with an ID46 transponder. The fob itself looks identical: 3 buttons, CR2032 cell, same form factor. The shift is internal. Programming now uses OBD-II plus server authentication on certain VINs, which means a token-based verification step during the key write. That extra security layer is exactly why DIY is off the table.
G22/G23/G26 Generation
BMW's current 4 Series lineup, the G22 coupe, G23 convertible, and G26 Gran Coupe, runs the brand's newest online security stack. The fob is a 3-to-4-button proximity smart key with comfort access, a laser-cut emergency blade inside, and a swappable CR2032 coin cell. Every replacement has to clear BMW OS server authentication online before the immobilizer accepts it, so there is no offline shortcut on this generation. Marco's San Diego van runs that server-gated programming at your curb.
Which 4 Series Fob Is in Your Hand?
Proximity unlock and push button start. If the battery dies, the hidden high-security blade folds out for manual door entry.
Same form factor on the outside, different brains inside. Your 2017+ fob talks to a CAS4+ module that requires server authentication for any new key.
Current G22/G23/G26 fob: proximity smart key, comfort access, laser-cut emergency blade inside, replaceable CR2032 coin cell. Because programming is server-gated through BMW OS, every key is authenticated online before the car accepts it. We run that account-backed handshake at your location.
What a BMW 4 Series Key Actually Runs You
Pricing covers the blank, high-security cutting, transponder programming, and on-site testing at your car.

The Most Common BMW 4 Series Key Failures
Smart Key Battery Drain
Comfort access keeps the proximity antenna polling around the clock. Store the fob too close (hook by the garage wall counts) and the CR2032 burns out fast. Constant in Carmel Valley. Fresh CR2032, then keep it 10+ feet from the car.
CAS Module Failure
2016-2019 4 Series suddenly not recognizing any key? First check is the CAS module. Comfort Access runs all authentication; glitched, immobilizer locks everything. Sometimes an OBD-II reset clears it. Sometimes needs EEPROM read and rewrite.
Transponder Sync Loss
Worked yesterday, cranks but will not fire today. Almost always follows a dead 12V, jump start, or fob battery swap done wrong. Transponder lost sync with the ECU. Quick OBD-II reprogram. We run this across Mira Mesa and Pacific Beach.
Can You Self-Program a BMW 4 Series Key at Home?
No backyard path on 2014-2016 4 Series. The EWS4.4 immobilizer requires professional gear (Autohex, VVDI2) with BMW-specific software to write a new transponder.
Facelift cars run CAS4+ with server authentication on a slice of VINs. Owner-level programming does not exist. Professional OBD-II tools plus token-based server access are the requirement.

BMW Trivia
The F32 4 Series smart keys debuted with diamond-cut blade profiles for added security. They were among the first BMW models running laser-trackable high-security blades, where the cut pattern can be digitally verified against a master profile. The geometry is so precise that off-the-shelf consumer key machines literally cannot reproduce it.
