2017 BMW 4 Series
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do I need to tow my 4 Series to the dealer if I have no working key?

No. Dealers say that because their process requires the car in their bay. Ours doesn't. We come to wherever the vehicle is sitting. The all-keys-lost procedure on these F-series BMWs involves module-level work, which we handle on site. Towing adds cost and time before you even get to the key bill, and then you're still looking at a wait while the dealer orders parts by VIN. We skip all of that.

Q: How long does an all-keys-lost replacement take on the 2017 4 Series?

Plan for roughly 2 to 3 hours on site. The F-series body electronics module on this generation typically requires bench work as part of the all-keys-lost process, which means we pull the module, handle the programming procedure, reinstall, and verify. After that we cut the blade and test everything at the car before we leave.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2017 BMW 4 Series. Can I program it myself?

No. Not on this generation. The F-series key system requires diagnostic equipment to register a new fob to the vehicle. There is no ignition-turn sequence, no button combination, no onboard self-programming trick that works here. That kind of owner relearn exists on older platforms with simpler setups. The 2017 4 Series is not that. If you already have the fob in hand, that part is fine, you still need a technician with the right tools to pair it.

Q: My 4 Series shows a key warning on the dash but the fob battery is new. What else could it be?

A few things. First check that the battery is a name-brand CR2032 seated flat with solid contact on both clips. Generic cells sometimes read low even when new. Beyond that, the fob's internal components can degrade over time independent of the battery, especially if the fob has been dropped or exposed to water.

2017 BMW 4 Series Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked near the courts off Ocean View Hills when the call came in. Guy had a 2017 BMW 4 Series sitting in a lot, fob in hand, car not responding. He had already swapped the battery himself, which was the right instinct, but he used a generic no-name CR2032 from a convenience store and seated it crooked without realizing it.

He told me he had found my channel before this ever happened. Watched a BMW key job, saw the actual module work on screen, and saved the number. So when things went sideways he wasn't starting from scratch trying to figure out who to trust.

I opened the fob on site. The battery was in there, but the positive contact had a slight outward bow from being forced, and the cell wasn't making clean contact. Straightened the clip, seated a fresh quality CR2032 flat and firm, snapped the shell closed.

Then I walked the car. Tested the door handles, confirmed the proximity detection range from a few feet back, ran all four buttons, and did three start cycles from normal operating distance. Everything came back clean. No programming needed, no module work, just a contact that wasn't making a solid connection.

He mentioned the dealer had already quoted him a full key replacement when he called them to ask about the range issue. That quote was sitting in his phone the whole time I was there. He didn't need it.

BMW 4 Series Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my BMW 4 Series keys. Can you still make a new one?▼

Yes. All-keys-lost on the 2017 4 Series is a real job, not a dealer-only situation. The F-series generation uses a body electronics module that handles key authorization, and adding keys with nothing present in the system requires diagnostic equipment and the ability to work with that module directly, sometimes on the bench. We read the vehicle data, generate a new key file matched to your specific car, cut a replacement blade, and register the fob.
