2018 BMW 4 Series Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
There's a watch repair shop near the Sprouts in Rancho Del Oro. A customer there had called another locksmith a few weeks before he called me. That locksmith had programmed a replacement smart key for his 2018 BMW 4 Series, and for three days everything seemed fine.
Then it stopped starting.
The car would crank, fire briefly, and cut out. Every time. The original locksmith told him the DME had gone bad and he needed a dealer visit. The customer drove over to the watch shop on his lunch break and looked it up while he waited for a battery swap on his watch. He found a thread on Bimmerpost where six different people described the exact same thing. Crank, brief fire, immediate stall. All of them had gotten a key programmed by someone who hadn't finished the job.
He called me from the parking lot.
I pulled up to his car with my diagnostic kit. The fob itself was fine, the factory fob with four buttons and the emergency blade tucked inside. The problem was in the back end. The security module and the engine control unit were out of sync. There's a secret value they have to share, and the previous programmer had paired the key to the fob side but never completed the sync between the two modules. BMW gives you a short window where the car runs anyway. Then the window closes.
I read the value out of the security module, wrote it correctly to the engine side, and verified the pairing end to end. First crank after that, the engine started and stayed running.
He asked what the dealer would have charged. I told him to call and find out, just for reference. He said he'd take my word for it.
