E71: Remote Head Key with EWS4
Your first-gen X6 uses a remote head key with an ID44 transponder chip and a high security HU92 blade. Three buttons for lock, unlock, and trunk. No push button start here; you turn this key in the ignition, and the EWS4 immobilizer verifies the chip before the engine fires. We program these over OBD-II at your car.
E71 LCI: Flip Key with CAS3
The facelift E71 jumped to a flip key with an ID46 chip and the CAS3 immobilizer. Still a high security blade, still three buttons, still no push button start. CAS3 is more complex than the older EWS4, requiring ISN extraction for programming. All handled over OBD-II on-site.
F16: Smart Key with CAS4
The F16 X6 went proximity smart key with an ID46 chip and push button start. Fob lives in your pocket, walk up, go. CAS4 immobilizer behind it is serious security, requiring PIN reading and OBD-II programming with professional tools. Right gear on every truck to handle this generation in your driveway.
G06: Smart Key with Server Authentication
The 2019 G06 runs an ID47 chip with a laser-cut blade and the new SG Coding immobilizer. This one requires BMW server authentication for key programming. We can handle it, but it takes longer and costs more than the older generations due to the server access. We always tell you that up front before rolling out.

Transponder Failure (2008-2014)
First check is EWS or CAS module sync. On 2008-2014 X6s, swapping the 12V or letting the fob battery die knocks the transponder out of sync. We resync over OBD-II, and if the ID44 or ID46 chip failed, we program fresh. 45 min in Pacific Beach.
Smart Key Battery Drain (2014-2019)
Owners blame a broken smart key when the problem is a dead battery. F16 and G06 proximity fobs drain fast if left inside the car. Fresh CR2032 first. If range is still short or push-button unresponsive, fob circuit may need reprogramming. (619) 876-1271.
Blade Wear (2008-2018)
X6 key will not turn in the ignition, or the door feels sticky? HU92 high-security blade on 2008-2018 cars wears with cycles, especially with regular physical key use. Grooves shallow, wafers stop engaging. We recut to factory spec using your key data.
CAS Module Failure (2014-2019)
CAS module itself is the culprit, not your key. On F16 and G06 cars, Comfort Access can fail outright; no key starts the car. Symptoms mimic a dead key: push start, nothing. We diagnose over OBD-II first and tell you honestly if a shop visit is needed.
Can You Self-Program an X6 Key at Home?
Zero self-programming path on the E71. EWS4 and CAS3 immobilizer systems require professional diagnostic gear to read the module and program a new transponder. Locksmith or dealer only.
CAS4 on your F16 does not support any DIY key programming. The proximity smart key needs professional PIN reading and OBD-II programming with tools like Autohex or VVDI2. No shortcuts.
The G06 requires BMW server authentication for any key programming. Most locksmiths cannot do this one without the right server access credentials. No DIY path.
