2016 BMW X6
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2016 BMW X6 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Fanita Ranch, the parking at some of the apartment complexes runs tandem, one car behind the other on a long concrete strip. Not a lot of room to move around, and that concrete is unforgiving.

A customer dropped her only smart key for her 2016 BMW X6 right on that slab. Wrong angle, wrong landing. The shell split clean and the key blade snapped. She had the fob housing in one hand and nothing else working. The blade was stuck in the door lock cylinder, and she had no way in and no way to start the car.

When I got there, I extracted the blade fragment from the cylinder first. Once I had the door open, I checked the transponder chip in the cracked fob. It had survived the fall intact, which matters. When the chip data is still readable, I can work from that instead of pulling everything from the vehicle modules, and that saves real time on a job like this.

I decoded the lock, cut two new key blades, transferred the salvageable electronics into a new shell, and programmed both keys to the vehicle on site. She watched the whole thing from the hood of my van.

Fifty minutes start to finish. She went from zero working keys to two. The dealer had already been called before I showed up, and the number they gave her was not close to what she paid me. If you still have a broken fob, even in pieces, bring everything. The chip inside is tougher than the shell and can make a real difference in how the job goes.
