Out in Rancho Santa Fe, over at The Crosby, a call came in that started simple and got interesting fast.
The owner had one key to her 2012 BMW X6. Single key, no spare, the usual situation when someone buys a used luxury vehicle and keeps meaning to get a backup. She parked in her spot, went to use the key at the door lock, and the blade snapped. Not a crack. A clean snap. Half the blade was in her hand. The other half was seated in the lock cylinder, not turning anything.
She found me online and I drove out to her.
First job was the fragment. A broken blade stuck in a lock cylinder can go wrong fast if you force it, so I worked it out carefully with the right extraction tools. No damage to the cylinder. Once that was clear, I decoded the lock to get the correct cut profile for a new key.
The original fob housing was cracked but the internals were intact. That mattered a lot. I was able to read the transponder data from the chip inside the damaged fob, which meant I did not have to go the longer route of pulling security data directly from the vehicle modules. I rebuilt the working electronics into a new shell, cut a fresh blade to the decoded profile, and programmed a second key as a spare while I was already set up.
She went from zero keys to two working keys in under an hour, right there in her driveway.
When she mentioned the dealer had been her first call and they wanted her to tow it in and wait several days for a parts order, the look on her face said everything. Mobile, on site, same morning. That is the whole point.
