2014 BMW 4 Series
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How do I know I am not getting scammed by a locksmith?

Three things to check before anyone rolls. Ask for the BSIS license number on the phone. Ask for a firm price for your specific vehicle. Ask if the price is all-in or if there are add-ons when they arrive. Scam operations quote one number on the phone and find creative reasons to double it in your driveway.

Q: Will the replacement key work exactly like the original on my 2014 BMW 4 Series?

Yes. A properly done replacement means the new fob is fully enrolled in the vehicle's security system, the start button recognizes it, and the remote functions all operate the way they should. We test every button and every function before we leave. The reason this question comes up on BMW forums is that there is a real failure mode when the job is done wrong.

Q: My 2014 BMW 4 Series shows a key warning on the dash but the car still starts fine. What does that mean?

That is usually the car telling you the fob battery is getting low, not that the key is failing. The vehicle's security system can still authorize a start when the battery has enough juice left, but it flags the low voltage before you lose full functionality. Swap the CR2032 first.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2014 BMW 4 Series. Can you still make a replacement?

Yes, all-keys-lost on a 2014 BMW 4 Series is a job we handle. It is more involved than adding a key to a vehicle that already has a working fob, and it takes longer - usually closer to the 60-minute end of the range rather than 30. The process requires connecting through the diagnostic port, clearing the existing key registry so the lost fobs cannot be used to start the car, and enrolling the new key fresh.

2014 BMW 4 Series Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Over in 4S Ranch, I got a call from a real estate agent on a Tuesday morning. It was around 8:30 and she had a showing at 10.

Her 2014 BMW 4 Series fob had stopped responding overnight - no lock, no unlock, start button sitting dead when she walked up. She had already tried holding the fob against the start button, which is the right instinct, but it was not getting her anywhere.

I pulled into the office lot in about 25 minutes.

The emergency blade got us into the car. From there I connected through the OBD port, pulled up the key registry, and confirmed the fob pairing had dropped. It happens. These vehicles store key authorization in the body electronics, and occasionally a fob falls out of that registry without an obvious trigger. The fob itself was fine. New CR2032, clean contacts, no physical damage. It just needed to be re-enrolled.

Re-pairing on site, verifying all four buttons, checking that the start button recognized the fob correctly, and walking the doors took about 35 minutes total.

She was backing out of that lot with time to spare before her showing. She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a wait time of several days just to get an appointment. I did not ask about the commission on the showing. Some things you do not need to spell out.

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to work on BMW vehicles in California?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz is licensed through the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, which is the state body that regulates automotive locksmiths. We carry full liability insurance. BMW smart key work involves re-pairing fobs to the vehicle's security system through the diagnostic port. You want someone who knows these systems specifically, not a general locksmith who dabbles. We work on BMWs regularly and use the right equipment for the job, which matters a lot on these vehicles.
