2003 BMW M3 Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out near the Live Oak Park Area, a guy called me from the shoulder of a road with half a key in his hand and half stuck in the ignition of his 2003 BMW M3.
The blade had snapped clean at the bow, right where the metal thins out near the cylinder face. He'd already called another locksmith who told him the cylinder would need to be drilled out and replaced. On a BMW, that conversation gets expensive before it even gets started.
He wanted a second opinion, so he called me.
I got there and took a look before touching anything. The fragment was seated but not jammed deep. I used a proper extraction tool and worked the broken piece out without touching the wafer surfaces inside the cylinder. No scratching, no damage, nothing that would affect how the lock reads a key afterward.
Once the fragment was out, I decoded the lock directly from the cylinder. Cut a fresh blade to match. Then programmed the transponder chip in the new remote head key using the OBD port, enrolled it to the immobilizer, and tested the remote functions against the car.
The new blade turned on the first try. The fob locked and unlocked without issue.
He didn't need a new ignition cylinder. He didn't need a tow to the dealer. The whole thing was handled on the shoulder, and he drove away in his car. The other locksmith's plan would have cost a lot more and left him with a replaced cylinder on an M3 that didn't need one.
