I got a call from a guy near the CSUSM Area, over by the VFW side of San Marcos. He'd already paid another locksmith for a key on his 1999 BMW M3. The blade was cut, the fob looked right, but the car wouldn't start. It cranked fine and then died every time. The first locksmith told him the immobilizer module was bad and left.
I got there and the module was not bad. What happened was the locksmith had cut and programmed a key without completing the full security sync between the key, the immobilizer module, and the engine control unit. On this generation of BMW, all three have to share the same internal security number. Miss that step and the engine computer will not release fuel. The car cranks and dies, every single time, and it looks like a module failure if you don't know what you're looking for.
I verified the blade cut first, then connected through the OBD port. I pulled the security data from the immobilizer side, cross-referenced it with the engine control unit, and ran the full synchronization with the correct key data. After that, three consecutive clean starts.
I walked him through the confirmation screen on my equipment so he could see the three-way match himself. He'd already paid once for a job that wasn't finished. I wasn't going to hand him a key and ask him to take it on faith.
The dealer quote he'd gotten earlier was a significant chunk more than what I charged, and that didn't even include the days of waiting for a VIN-ordered key to arrive.
