2002 BMW M3
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2002 BMW M3 Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got the call late on a Friday evening from a guy in the Bayside area of Imperial Beach. He'd been at a spot near the water, set his jacket down, and when he looked up it was gone. Keys, wallet, the whole thing. He borrowed someone's phone, called his wife, then called me.

The car was a 2002 BMW M3, sitting in the lot with zero keys. His wife had already called the dealer while he waited. They told her the car would need to be towed in, they'd need a few days to source the fob, and they strongly recommended a full immobilizer service since the stolen key could still open the car. The number they gave her made her go quiet for a second.

The 2002 M3 runs an earlier EWS-based immobilizer, not the later module architecture BMW moved to. That changes how the job gets done. All-keys-lost on this generation means I have to wipe the enrolled key data so the stolen fob goes electronically dead, then register fresh keys from scratch using the right equipment for this system. I cut the blade on site, enrolled two new fobs, and walked through every function before I packed up.

He was driving home before his wife had to come get him. The stolen fob is useless now. Once the key memory is wiped, it's just plastic with a dead battery.

The dealer route would have cost him more, taken the better part of a week, and required a tow. He paid a fraction of that and kept his Friday night from getting any worse.
