How Ford Secured the Excursion
Early PATS with Texas 4C Chip
The 2000-2002 Excursion shipped with PATS II and a plain blade carrying a Texas 4D63 chip in the head. No buttons, no battery, on-board self-pair available with a working key.
Streamlined to One FCC ID
The 2003-2004 refresh added the 3-button remote head key option on Limited trim. Same Texas 4D63 chip, standard cut blade, CR2032 inside.
Final Production Years
The 2005 final-run trucks kept PATS II architecture through the last build. Aftermarket blanks still available in 2026, dealer stock long gone.
Which Key Is in Your Excursion?
Plain metal blade, Texas 4D63 chip in the head, no buttons, no battery. Crank the cylinder and the immobilizer handshakes with the PCM.
Three buttons integrated into the head, lock-unlock-panic. Standard cut blade, CR2032 powers the remote.
Aftermarket replacement keys still available for every Excursion model year. We carry them on the van.

Excursion Key Problems We See in San Diego
Fob Programming Timing Failure
Theft icon flashing, the Powerstroke or V10 cranks but refuses to fire. Classic on every Excursion year after a battery disconnect or worn transponder. Marco brings OBD-II to Alpine or Ramona and resets PATS on-site.
Transponder Not Recognized
Excursion keys see hard use on towing rigs. Soft-cut blades wear fast on high-mileage trucks, and the cylinder rebuild stacks on if the wear is caught late. A VIN-cut blade fixes most cases for cheap when spotted early.
Incompatible Fob Frequency
Remote head key on a 2003+ Excursion stops responding. Usually a flat CR2032, swap the cell first. Battery dies again inside weeks means the board has shorted, and a fresh fob with paired chip is the fix.
Can You Pair It Yourself?
Yes on every Excursion model year with two working keys. PATS on-board two-key add procedure runs in five minutes. Single key collapses to OBD-II.

Did You Know?
The Excursion is the largest SUV Ford has ever produced. Built on the F-250 Super Duty chassis, it tipped the scales at over 7500 pounds and ate three-car garages whole. The 2000 launch year shipped with PATS II from day one, which made it one of the harder-to-hot-wire luxury haulers of the early 2000s. Six model years, then Ford pulled the plug in 2005. The few that remain still get key calls in 619.
