2004 Ford Excursion
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Is a mobile locksmith actually cheaper than going to the Ford dealer for a key?

For a 2004 Excursion, yes, and by a real margin. The dealer breaks the job into pieces: key blank, cutting, programming labor, and sometimes a shop fee just to look at it. A mobile locksmith bundles all of that into one call. On top of the price difference, you don't pay a tow if the truck isn't drivable, and you're not waiting days for a shop appointment.

Q: Does the price cover cutting and programming, or are those separate?

One price, everything in. The key blank, cutting the blade to your specific vehicle, programming the transponder to the immobilizer, and a full test before I leave. That's the job. No separate line for programming, no add-on for the cut, no surprise at the end. What you hear on the phone is what the job costs.

Q: I have one working key left for my 2004 Excursion. Should I get a spare made now or wait until I need it?

Get it made now. This comes up constantly with Excursion owners, and the math is simple: with one working key in hand, you have options. A second key can be cut and programmed to the vehicle in under an hour at your location in Lakeside. If that last key gets lost, broken, or locked inside, the job becomes an all-keys-lost situation. That takes longer, requires a different procedure, and costs more.

Q: My 2004 Excursion starts but immediately stalls every time. The key turns fine. What's going on?

That start-then-stall pattern on a vehicle where the key physically turns is a classic sign that the immobilizer is not recognizing the transponder in the key. The engine fires on the starter, the immobilizer cuts fuel, and it dies. Sometimes it's a key that was never properly programmed, or one that lost its pairing. Sometimes it's a worn key where the transponder isn't being read cleanly by the antenna ring around the ignition.

2004 Ford Excursion Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in Lakeside Proper called me on a Tuesday morning. He had a 2004 Ford Excursion, one of the big ones, parked in his driveway off a side street near the older part of town. His only key had snapped at the base of the blade right at the ignition cylinder. The blade tip was still inside. He had no spare.

His first call was the Ford dealer. They told him it was a half-day job, minimum wait was three days out, and he'd need to get it towed in. He called me after that.

I got there with my extraction tools and my programmer. Got the broken blade tip out of the cylinder without pulling the whole lock. Then I cut a replacement key to the vehicle and programmed the transponder chip to the immobilizer on site. The whole thing took under an hour in his driveway on a normal Tuesday.

He said the dealer quote made it sound like open-heart surgery. It wasn't. It was a broken key and a driveway and the right tools. He saved a good chunk and never moved the truck.

Ford Excursion Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How much does a 2004 Ford Excursion key replacement cost?▼

Call us for the exact number, but it will be way less than the dealer route. The job includes the key blank, cutting the blade to your vehicle, programming the transponder chip to the immobilizer, and on-site mobile service here in Lakeside. Dealers tend to break this into separate line items: the blank, a cutting fee, a programming labor charge, and sometimes a security or diagnostic fee on top of that. Those add up fast.
